Stop housing development on Abbey Park Golf Course

We call on the Redditch Borough Council to do everything in their power to stop any part of this precious green space being turned into a housing development and to reject planning application 21/01830/FUL.

Why is this important?

We are deeply concerned that building houses on the Abbey golf course (Redditch) will have direct negative impact to all residents of Hither Green Lane as well as affecting residents of Church Hill, Beoley and Bordesley.

The proposed development would have a detrimental effect on the environment, biodiversity and the wild life in the area which includes deer, foxes, bats, rabbits and birds in and around the numerous ponds. There is also an even greater risk of flooding as more and more fields are concreted over.

This would mean further loss of green space in an area that has already suffered heavy losses in green space with the newly built Bovis homes opposite the Abbey Stadium and the planned development of 800 plus Persimmons homes adjacent to it; all on greenfield sites. The Redditch Borough Council has sufficient land allocated to housing development in order to meet its stated targets up to 2030 which therefore renders any development on the golf course (within this timeframe) completely unnecessary.

The Birmingham Road (A441) and Dagnell End Road traffic light junction is already over capacity with frequent traffic jams occurring as a result. The additional cars and journeys that come with those houses would extend people's travel times and increase air and noise pollution. During a climate emergency this is counter to the council’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions.

Thank you to all of you that have supported this petition and helped in objecting to this application. As the article in the Redditch Standard outlines the application was unanimously refused:
https://redditchstandard.co.uk/news/application-for-housing-development-on-redditchs-abbey-park-golf-course-refused/

Our thanks to our local MP, the several Councillors from across the political spectrum and former Councillor who spoke or wrote opposing the application. Their words added weight to the compelling case NoRCA had produced.

However, it is possible the applicant will seek to appeal the decision or may resubmit a revised application. NoRCA will remain vigilant and will be prepared to rebut any further challenges.. The first battle has been won – but there may be more work to do ahead.

The council planning website has an updated application for the David Wilson homes on the Golf Course which claims to have addressed concerns but includes minimal material change.

It is vital for the campaign to have your objections or reiteration of your previous objections lodged by 26th May latest. They need to be in your own words and indicate your strong objection.

Update. The 300+ individual objections to Redditch Borough Council, coupled with the near 1000 signature petition, have been significant in delaying consideration of the application by the Planning Committee to beyond the 5th May local elections and probably into at least July-August and possibly even into the Autumn.

The Steering Committee of North Redditch Communities Alliance (NoRCA) still meets regularly to update information and consider further actions, including more meetings with relevant Councillors after the election results are known.

We continue to believe that our case for rejection is strong.
