STOP SANTANDER FUNDING FOREST DESTRUCTION

UPDATE: Feb 2015

After receiving thousands of queries and complaints, the bank today announced

'Banco Santander has decided to not renew the current funding to APRIL and will not be extending further funding at this stage. Any future loans will be conditional on APRIL implementing new sustainability measures which address its involvement with deforestation.'

Stop funding companies that are destroying the worlds forests.

Why is this important?

It has recently been known that mega bank company Santander is funding forest destruction on a massive scale in Indonesia. The company denied their actions for many months, but after Greenpeace released a campaign signed by 75,000 people, they finally came clean.

On the 11th of February 2015, Santander released a statement revealing that they are involved in funding APRIL, a pulp and paper company in Indonesia. And although coming clean about what they had been up to, they also revealed that they were continuing to fund APRIL and tried to make restitution by telling us that they "will continue to monitor the company’s progress against the agreed improvements and act accordingly."

Greenpeace researches have learned that in the past year alone, an area of rain forest three times the size of Paris has been taken away from Borneo. Yet our friendly, or not so friendly high street bank are still putting money on the table.

As a Santander customer, I was incredibly outraged when I learned this news and I don't feel that Santander are taking it seriously enough.

It is therefore that I ask upon the 38 degrees community to stop forest destruction on a massive scale across Indonesia but also to let Santander know that we think their actions are wrong, and we want to do something about it.

Thankyou.
