Stop Starmer wasting taxpayer money on the illegal proscription of Palestine Action

We demand that Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not spend a penny more of tax payers' money appealing the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation.

The High Court has a ready judged this proscription llegal and Mr Starmer's government has already spent huge amounts on excessive policing of protests and the arrests (under terrorism laws) of 3000 mostly peaceful members of the public simply for holding a sign.

There are many more urgent and useful things the government could be spending taxpayers money on that would improve the lives of UK citizens.

Why is this important?

The High Court judged the Government’s proscription of Palestine Action under terrorism legislation unlawful -

Amnesty International describes this as a vital affirmation of the right to protest at a time when it has been under sustained and deliberate attack.

Amnesty International UK was an intervener in this case arguing that proscribing Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation was clearly a violation of rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The Court was clear: the Home Secretary can’t reach for the nuclear option simply because it makes policing easier. Using proscription to criminalise people’s expressions of support or to hand police sweeping disruption powers was never what the policy allowed.

The court also found that the proscription resulted in a very significant and unjustified interference with freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly (Articles 10 and 11 ECHR).
