Stop the Road and Stop the Sprawl to the South of Chippenham
You do not have the mandate to build a distributor road between the A350 and the A4 to the south of Chippenham - nor the urban sprawl that will accompany it. As was made clear in the recent consultation, the people of Chippenham object strongly to excessive development that would destroy the Wiltshire countryside. We urge you to reconsider your decision, cancel your plan and withdraw from negotiations with Homes England.
Why is this important?
Wiltshire Council does not have a mandate to build a distributor road to the south of Chippenham between the A350 and the A4, nor to create the urban sprawl that will accompany it. During the January ā March 2021 consultation, the people of Chippenham unanimously said NO to the destruction of the countryside. We also said how walks across the fields and along the Wilts and Berks canal had been our salvation during lockdown. For the current plan, we are not even being consulted. Why are we not being listened to?
Once again, discussions with Homes England are happening behind closed doors. This lack of transparency makes a mockery of the democratic process and might well be unlawful.
The 3,800 - 4,200 houses that Wiltshire Council is planning to build would bring between 8,000 to 10,000 more cars adding to, not reducing congestion as is often claimed. This number of houses far exceeds Chippenham's projected housing needs which can, we believe, be met by building on existing brownfield sites.
Why is Wiltshire Council showing such a complete disregard for the Climate Crisis and ignoring its own Climate Strategy?
