Stop The Rot Carlisle

Some of our city buildings have been left to rot whilst the council continues, often for decades, to turn a blind eye: the Lonsdale Cinema was lost as a result of the council doing nothing, the Central Plaza was left to rot, and for around 30 years visitors to the city have driven past a rotting building that was once JP Dias. Only yards from the County Council Headquarters this building is in a prime location in a main route into the city but has stood semi-derelict for as long as people can recall. It's a disgrace.

We demand that the council issues a 215 Order to the owner/s of not only this building but to the owners of other buildings left to rot in our city, and restore the buildings to an acceptable standard, both structurally and cosmetically. Other councils use 215 Orders with great success, so why can't ours?

Why is this important?

Residents of Carlisle take great pride in their city yet feel exasperated by the decades that buildings are left to rot without the council taking any action. They're an eyesore that damages trade, deters local investment, are a poor advert for the city to tourists and make the city feel and look unloved. Many of these buildings may also be a hazard to the public walking past them as they have not been maintained for decades.
