Tighter legislation around water company's CSO discharges in Cornwall

Cornish beaches and rivers are being devastated by combined sewage outlets (CSOs) and raw sewage discharges by water companies in the South West. Self reporting and loose legislation allows them to do this with little penalty, treating the nominal fines as an operating cost rather than a serious deterrent. Tighter legislation would force water companies to invest the enormous profits into upgrading the storm infrastructure, reducing agricultural run-off and equipping the county to safely deal with a serious health and environmental issue. Forward thinking organisations like https://www.gillyflowerfarm.com/ and https://www.gillyflowerfarm.com/golf are also great examples of how responsible land management can reduce run-off and flooding to ease the pressure on our public facilities.

Why is this important?

Every year countless people become sick. Water polluted with sewage causes gastroenteritis, stomach upsets, ear, nose and throat infections, eye infections and in severe cases hospitalisations. It also also incredibly damaging for local wildlife, sea grass meadows, fish populations etc.
