Transparency for Benefit Claimants

6/4/21

The DWP has finally agreed that an audio recording facility will be introduced for all Personal Independence Payment assessments.

There is a good article on this development in the Disability News Service at

https://www.disabilitynewsservice.com/audio-recording-option-set-to-be-introduced-for-all-pip-assessments-says-dwp/

This supplements the audio recording facility already introduced for Work Capability Assessments (for Employment & Support Allowance, or Universal Credit), which is described here https://www.chdauk.co.uk/faq/finding-help/how-do-i-request-audio-recorded-assessment

Thank you for your support for the small part that we have been able to play in winning this concession from the DWP.

We call upon the Government to require Assessment Providers to :

• audio record PIP and WCA assessment interviews
• provide claimants with a copy of the recording with their decision letters

Why is this important?

Giving claimants a copy of their assessment interviews is important.

It provides them with vital personal information.

It increases trust and transparency in the system.

In the past Assessment Providers have not recorded interviews for either PIP (Personal Independence Payment) or WCA (Work Capacity Assessment). As a result, claimants have had no record of their assessment interviews.

We welcome the Scottish initiative which allows audio recordings of ALL interviews.

We therefore call upon the Government to require Assessment Providers to follow the Scottish model by:
• recording both PIP and WCA assessment interviews
• providing claimants with a copy of the recording with their decision letters
