URGENT - Defend Public Access to NHS in Northern Ireland

Urgent Need for MLAs to take responsibility for Accountable Governance over Department of Health (DOH) Reviews and Policy in NHS in Northern Ireland

PROTECT THE NHS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

People in NI are suffering years of pain, illness, and preventable deaths on long waiting lists, long journeys to access care, and in hospital corridors.

Waiting Lists growing by over 216%.  No NHS Targets met since 2014.

But meanwhile....... MLAs agreed to 'Transformation for Better Outcomes' without demanding what it meant, if more people suffered or died, if inequality deepened or if it cost more and whose interests were being met.

Private Healthcare is booming -  250% Private admissions, 225% Self Pay, 238% Insured admissions to Private Commercial.

DOH Plan – CLOSE vital accessible NHS Services > Forcing rural people to flood urban hospitals.

(This will also Centralise many NHS Consultants rotas closer to Commercial Providers).

DOH plan seeks £475 million Public Money for Commercial Private providers in NHS space.

DOH plan – is Spend less than half of that increasing Permanent NHS staff capacity needed.

DOH spend £320 Million on Agency staff rather than giving good permanent NHS contracts.

POLICY MUST BE IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST – NOT COMMERICAL FOR PROFIT INTEREST.

73 % People say ‘It’s wrong to be extracting profits from NHS’. We cannot afford not to have NHS.

Evidence > Private = Higher Mortality, Higher Costs, Deeper Inequality, Job Insecurity +Collapses NHS.

Why is this important?

Because people in Northern Ireland have suffered decades of trauma and its associated with physical as well as mental health issues.

Because those who need care most are our older people. The same people who lived through the worst of the troubles.

Because the political division and focus on constitutional issues at elections makes it harder for people to challenges on issues like health provision. This makes NI health care systems more vulnerable to exploitation by corporate interests seeking to profit from ill health.

Because funding private corporations to deliver health care rather than properly recruiting, retaining and funding permanent NHS staff  - costs more and deepens inequality and we cant afford this.

Because many older people are being forced to hand over their life savings to access health care as they cant cope with the pain or suffering.

Because it is preventable suffering, deaths and harms.

Because whilst  of people are suffering, there are parents, carers, disabled people, people struggling with mental health issues that are enduring challenges in even more difficult circumstances so those of us who can must do what we can now.

Because if we dont act now studies show we will end up with a poor NHS for poor people. Thats not ok.

Because there are solutions but people must come together and make all elected representatives and each party take responsibility being part of making health policy - not leaving such vital, cross cutting and controversial decisions up to a small group of civil servants and one Minister.
