Vote of no confidence in Hyndburn Borough Council

Stand Down and allow the people of Hyndburn to elect people that will democratically represent them in a fit and proper manner and who actually have an understanding of the word "Democracy".

Why is this important?

Not unlike other areas of government, democracy has not been aparant in Hyndburn for some time, however, the recent act of felling the town's two horse chestnut trees in front of the markt hall that were heading for 80 years old was nothing less than an act of criminal damage.

In the past the council have blocked access to motor vehicles and filtered them towards 2 large superstores; starving the town centre of custom. They have built an unwanted bus station and even named it after the man that presided over the commencement of the demise of the town. They keep the town in a poorly maintained dirty condition and everything that they do is with the minimum of effort, but felling these 2 beautiful trees is the final straw.

This petition is here to demonstrate to the council how we feel about them and their actions. It is not political but we do desire the current councillors to stand down and allow us to elect people that will democratically represent us.

Well the "Letter before claim" has gone in and we have given them until 6th March to respond. If we don't hear anything by then or don't get a satisfactory response then we're off to court to apply for permission to have the decision Judicially reviewed. There is always a chance that the application for permission will fail, but we think that we have a strong case. Sorry, can't say any more at this stage, but there is a lot going on in the background so keep the faith and please carry on informing as many people as you can about this petition; because of the nature of our case, the more people that sign it, the stronger our case will be.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE:
We have decided to engage in the process of Judicial Review. Hopefully the council will see sense and save themselves and us a great deal of time and effort by resolving this at the alternate dispute resolution stage rather than it going to a full hearing, but I am not holding my breath.

Well we have now made it into the Telegraph; According to Miles Parkinson the trees had to come down because moles were having difficulty in seeing the "Market Hall’s beautiful facade" Yes you read that right; I quote: "There were problems with those trees roots. They were stopping a proper view of the Market Hall’s beautiful facade."

Within Hyndburn there are a substantial number of people who do not have internet access and so we are looking for people with businesses that are willing to keep hard copies of the petition in their premises for non internet users. If you are willing to do this then please drop me a line. Additionally, if you can display a poster A3 or A4 then again, please message me. Thanks.

Truly amazing that so many of you are getting on board with this; We are currently preparing a substantive update to keep you informed which we are hoping to have ready soon.

While I am absolutely mortified about the trees, this is not just about them; it is about the lack of democracy in our local council. Many are siting the bus station move as another undemocratic decision and I wholly agree, but this goes back much further than that. The purpose of this campaing is to have a peaceful transition to a democratic council and I reiterate to ALL councillors that it is not about the colour of the tie that you wear, it is about the way that you represent us.

PS. We already have the attention of the councillors who are somewhat predictably playing the blame game, but we need a lot more signatures before they will pay proper attention.

To anybody considering standing for office: We do not care what color of flag you stand under because we want you to represent us rather than your own self interests and the intersts of your party. If you are prepared to do that then please get in touch.
