Following a campaign in Colchester which made local and national news, in February 2019 a planning application was submitted to Colchester Borough Council to make the entrance to the ESA Disability Assessment Centre in Wellington Street accessible to range of disabilities. Permission for that was given. Since then, no further action has been taken, and no building works of any nature have been done. We want the DWP to keep their word and ensure that the work is now begun promptly.
Why is this important?
Disabled people from Colchester are still being sent to Chelmsford, and are still being forced to 'prove' that both the Colchester and Chelmsford assessment centres are inaccessible to them. But that's not the worst of it, because some disabled people, like Jaki Whyte, continue to be told that the centre is accessible to them, and that they have 'failed' to prove it was inaccessible! This is an outrageous injustice, creating yet another tier of discrimination, which the DWP MUST end, and reverse, NOW.
