    Refugees Welcome in Dorking
We are seeing the biggest humanitarian crisis since the Second World War and it is the responsibility of all of us to respond. This means each council and town doing its bit. The people of Dorking and the Mole Valley want our area to be a part of this. Let's stand up for Britain's long tradition of helping refugees fleeing war. Let's show the Prime Minister that we, the people of the UK, are proud to do our part and provide refuge to people in their hour of need.

Aylan, the toddler who drowned fleeing Syria, was just three years old. His town was under attack by Isis. His five year old brother and his mum also died trying to reach safety. Yet our prime minister has just said ‘we won't take any more refugees’. He thinks that most of us don't care. But 38 Degrees members do care. Aylan, the toddler who drowned fleeing Syria, was just three years old. His town was under attack by Isis. His five year old brother and his mum also died trying to reach safety. While other EU countries have agreed to resettle thousands of refugees, the home office has continued to block safe passage for Syrians in need. Since the Syrian war began in 2011, the UK has only granted asylum to 187 Syrian people. The Dublin Agreement, which stipulates that refugees must seek asylum in the first European country they arrive in, hugely exacerbates this disparity and must be changed. Yet this does not absolve our government of responsibility, especially in this time of crisis. Boats too full to safely sail leave foreign shores daily and the people boarding them do so out of desperation. Many of these boats do not make it. Many of the passengers wash up dead on European shores. Yet our prime minister has just said ‘we won't take any more refugees’. He thinks that most of us don't care. But we do care. We don't want Britain to be the kind of country that turns its back as people drown in their desperation to flee places like Syria. We don't want Britain to continue to allow innocent babies to suffer until they inevitably die at the hands of corrupt traffickers. So let's stand up for Britain's long tradition of helping refugees fleeing war. Let's show the Prime Minister that we, the people of the UK, are proud to do our part and provide refuge to people in their hour of need.
