To: IPSO - the proposed new self regulating body for the press

Ban this wretched man - William Newman

Dear IPSO,
Bad enough that self regulation of the press has been palpably useless. You have the outrageous temerity of recruiting William Newman to your new body IPSO for press regulation. This was a man who worked for the Sun when it outrageously libelled and insulted Liverpool supporters who died at Hillsborough and even sent a letter out to grieving parents defending the papers position on the 28 April 1989. stating "We are sorry that, possibly clouded by grief, many have not understood that it is the Sun's duty as a newspaper to publish information, however hurtful and unpalatable it may be at the time. On reflection, we accept the way in which the article was displayed could have given cause for offence. For that we apologise. For the substance we do not."
If you expect the public to give your new body any credence, then remove this odious individual from your board immediately.
Shame on you all!

Why is this important?

Freedom of the press is essential for any functional democracy. The hacking scandal has exposed the UK's press urgent need for reform and effective regulation. The majority of the press want to self-regulate with a new body IPSO but the recruitment of William Newwman to the new IPSO board shows it will be business as usual for the press. Most people understand ,the risk of government involvement in press regulation as recommended by Lord Justice Leveson, but this represents continued contempt by the press for the 96 who died at Hillsborough. It seems you will never learn...
