Commit to pet food pouch recycling

Thousands of tonnes of pet food pouches are going to landfill every year when they are completely recyclable. As manufacturers of the UK's biggest pet food brands (Whiskas, Felix, Pedigree Chum, Cesar), please be part of the solution and commit to making the recycling process available throughout the UK.

Why is this important?

Plastic aluminium laminate packaging is creating SIX TIMES the amount of waste produced by takeaway coffee cups: 120,000 tonnes goes into landfill every year in the UK, and it’s completely unnecessary.

You'll have come across this stuff if you feed your cat or dog food from pouches. And you'll know how many they can get through.

Pouches made of plastic aluminium laminate are increasingly used by pet food manufacturers like Mars and Nestlé-Purina, because they use less energy to produce and transport than other packaging.

The recycling process (carried out by a company called Enval in Cambridgeshire) produces valuable high-grade aluminium as well as oil from the plastic. If recycled, this packaging would actually be very environmentally sustainable.

The technology is not widely available because it needs investment. As major producers of this plastic waste, Mars and Nestlé are part of the problem. They have the responsibility to be part of the solution - by committing to making recycling available throughout the UK - and putting their money where their mouth is.
