Extend the Payment Deadline for Registered Labour Supporters
Extend the deadline for registered supporter applications to noon on Monday 8 August 2016.
Why is this important?
We understand that £25 is a fee that better enables the Party to cover its costs. However, the scale of the increase paired with the unexpectedly short deadline has inadvertently closed this option for the least fortunate in our society, whom the Labour Party exists to defend.
An extension until 8 August gives:
- People an additional two weeks in which to save the money
- Assurance that those receiving Jobseekers' Allowance or other statuary benefits will have received at least one payment before the deadline
- An increased likelihood that those on a contract of unfixed hours will have had undertaken paid work before the deadline
- The ability for people to wait until after the end of the month, a common payday throughout the UK
- More time to adjust personal budgets to better account for the expense
We call on the Labour Party to assist with minimising the impact of poverty on this democratic process whilst still ensuring it is in a position to cover the costs of running the Registered Supporter scheme.
