Not to charge tolls to use an existing bridge. The Runcorn Bridge, also known as The Silver Jubilee Bridge has never been tolled but the government insist that once the new bridge is built in 2015/17 then the old existing bridge must also be tolled. An existing bridge has never been tolled in Britain before and we cannot see why this one should be.

Why is this important?

The Runcorn Bridge connects two parts of the same town, Runcorn and Widnes, known collectively as Halton. The cost to local people who must use this bridge to go to work, to the hospital, to local shops, ice rink, cinema, cemetery, to Liverpool City and Airport, visit relations and many other reasons, the people of Halton will have to pay a local tax otherwise known as a toll. A voucher system has been offered giving locals a small discount but the bridge should be toll free for all.

Free passage over the bridge has now been given only to very local people but not to people living nearby, Our friends from Northwich, Frodsham, Daresbury, Helsby, Speke, Prescott, St Helens, Penketh, Warrington and many other people living in the area will still have to pay to go to work, shopping, visit relatives, visit Liverpool and the airport.
These bridges will be part of the English road system and must not be tolled.
This could happen in YOUR AREA SOON!!

Today 25th July 2014 George Osborne has announced that the two bridges will be toll free for Halton residents. He also said this did not include local businesses or other people who do not live in the local area so we have only won part of our campaign. Our concerns remain because tolls for business/commercial users will still apply whether such organisations are from inside the borough or not. WE believe local trade and commerce will be greatly affected by tolls and they will have no choice but to pass the toll costs onto the customer. Equally the implications remain for our local Halton economy due to outside deliveries, transport services etc and the price rises of goods / services in the borough generally. We keep up the struggle!!! and we need your votes, please.

It now looks like Warrington Borough Council is worried about the tolls as the amount of traffic that will try to avoid the tolls will be very detrimental to their town.
