Hands off Bury's Green Belt

I oppose developments on Bury' s Green Belt land and demand that, as a member of Greater Manchester Combined Authority Board of Executive, you take action to save and protect our Green Belt.

Why is this important?

Greater Manchester Combined Authority is planning for an extra 227,200 homes over the next 25 years. This is based on an unrealistic economic growth of 2.5% year on year and a flawed population growth forecast. If this plan is approved, Bury will bear the brunt of these proposals with 12,500 new dwellings on Green Belt land and a new industrial and warehousing site larger than Trafford Park at the M66 and M60/ M62 motorways junction. More homes are needed and new jobs are welcome, but we can work out ways to meet our housing needs and facilitate the creation of decent, well paid jobs in Bury without encroaching on the existing Green Belt land.

There is no justification for reducing our Green Belt land anywhere in Bury. The Greater Manchester Combined Authority Spatial Framework is based on flawed evidence with regards to their forecast over the next 20 years for economic and population growth. An assumption of 2.5% economic growth year on year is over optimistic and unrealistic. The OBR November 2016 Economic and Fiscal Outlook forecast an average growth rate of 1.86% over the next 5 years. The Bank of England indicates a lower rate still around 1. 1/2%. The population growth projection envisages higher migration in the early years with nothing to back this claim. The Campaign to Protect Rural England has provided an assessment from an independent demographer who questions a number of assumptions, in particular the possibility of double counting migration flows. These now require some serious downward revision.
