Increase and improve school transport facilities

Local councils have no power to improve or increase bus services to meet the need of youngsters travelling to and from school. Youngster as young as 11 are being left at bus stops with no way of getting to school on time with buses not stopping because they are full.

There is certainly a problem nationally with the system by which bus companies receive subsidies from national government (for pensioners passes) and from local authorities (for school children) but cannot be compelled to lay on capacity sufficient for the subsidised passengers.

We would like the Secretary of State to address this problem by finding a way to ensure any licenced transport providers meet the needs of the customers it has been subsidised to provide for.

Why is this important?

The stress that is caused by buses not arriving, children being late for school and not being able to get home on time, will all impact on both their academic achievement and their emotional well being, both which will have long term effects on their place in society and society itself.
