New School, New Pool (like for like)

Seaham is due to get a new secondary school, which is long overdue, however the new school does not include a swimming pool but our current school does.

We would like our new secondary school to have a pool, like for like! Without a pool, current swimming lessons for children from the ages of 5+ will be lost, along with other various groups that use this facility.

Why is this important?

Its is so important that Seaham's new secondary school is replaced, like for like, and that it includes a swimming pool.

Past generations of Seaham learnt to swim in a makeshift outdoor swimming pool, colloquially known as the pit pond, which was in fact water storage for Dawdon Colliery, however following the demise of the mining industry, and the closure of the three pits which were in the town, the pit pond was lost to the following generations.

Swimming is such a vital life skill and even more so for the children of Seaham who live on the North Sea coast to have access to a decent sized learning pool. We believe the whole community would benefit from the replacement of the pool. This is not about profit, this is about saving lives. Surely one pool is worth more than several lives which have been lost in the past few years in our seas.

We have received a reply from Durham County Council and they have said that the funding for the school is set by central government and that they have no say on the school having a pool. The next step therefore is to take this petition to London!! Keep sharing and signing!!

Dear Supporters,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone so far for all your support with this campaign.
We have over 4,500 signatures (both online and on paper combined) which is absolutely fantastic. This amount of support shows us how important the issue is to the people of Seaham. People are giving their support, showing they are willing to fight to get our children what is owed to them and what is an essential facility to have within the town.

Durham County Council are currently carrying out a study on the leisure services within Seaham and this should to be completed by April/May time. Hopefully we will know by then what chances we have of getting a replacement pool for our children. Lets keep optimistic until then and keep collecting signatures, every signature counts.
