Refugees Welcome in Blandford

Offer to home 50 refugee families

Why is this important?

Aylan, the toddler who drowned fleeing Syria, was just three years old. His town was under attack by Isis. His five year old brother and his mum also died trying to reach safety.

Yet our prime minister has just said ‘we won't take any more refugees’. He thinks that most of us don't care. But 38 Degrees members do care. We don't want Britain to be the kind of country that turns its back as people drown in their desperation to flee places like Syria.

So let's stand up for Britain's long tradition of helping refugees fleeing war. Let's show the Prime Minister that we, the people of the UK, are proud to do our part and provide refuge to people in their hour of need.

Well we've made the press!!

http://www.blackmorevale.co.uk/Blandford-petition-urges-town-50-refugee-families/story-27801537-detail/story.html

Thanks again to everyone for supporting this so far. Lets hope the publicity gets more signatures. Although the petition has been handed in it is far from finished.

The petition will be handed over to Councillor Carr Jones on Monday 14th at 1.45. If you would like to join me please let me know so I can let them have an idea of numbers on Monday morning.

It would be great if we could have some supporters along as we will be taking a photo for the Blackmore Vale Magazine for them to print along with an overview of the council's current position.

Many thanks
Sascha

Its lovely to see we've gone well past the 100 signature mark! With a few days left I'm sure we could reach 200, or even 300!

I popped into Norden this morning and have arranged for Bernice Dudleston, CEO of the council, to call me to arrange a time to drop off the petition. I'll let you know as soon as that's been done, if anyone wishes to join me they'd be very welcome.

But in the mean time I'm going to give her a list of questions we'd like answered when we meet. These are what I have so far, if you can think of any others please let me know:

- What is the council's current commitment for taking refugees?

- If this is less than 50 families, when are you planning to increase it?

- If there is no current commitment, when and with whom will there be a discussion on making a commitment?

Thanks again for taking the time to sign.

best wishes
Sascha

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to sign this petition. 38 Degrees are arranging for all the local petitions to be handed in after the weekend, so I will be arranging to take it down to our local office, Norden, on Salisbury Road sometime on Monday 14th. I'll let you know when a time and date is arranged in case anyone would like to join me.

In the mean time, it would be great to get as many signatures as possible to hand in, so if you could share with your friends and family that would be great. The more we can show our support, the more likely NDCC are to commit to having 50 families of refugees welcomed to our area.

Thanks again, Sascha
