Road Safety for Greenbank School Children on Smithdown Road

We need safer road crossing for children travelling to Greenbank School at the Junction of Smithdown Road and Greenbank Road.

We request that Liverpool City Council implement the following measures as part of the Smithdown Road redevelopment:

1. Improved signage and warnings so drivers are aware earlier that they are approaching a school zone.
2. Increasing the length of time the traffic lights stay on red at peak times to enable the children to cross safely.
3. Add an additional pelican crossing between the Peking Duck Restaurant and Tesco

Why is this important?

Liverpool City Council have already decided to cut some school crossing patrols (Lollipop ladies/men) because they are not a statutory service and therefore they do not have a legal obligation to keep our children safe. Although Greenbank Primary’s School crossing patrol was cut, Greenbank School along with more than another 50 schools have stepped in to fund this vital service.

As you are all more than aware, a huge redevelopment is taking place on Smithdown Road, many of us have raised concerns about making this road much safer for pedestrians. This is the perfect opportunity to request Liverpool City Council to make this junction between Smithdown Road and Greenbank Road much safer to cross.

After several emails to the City Council and local Councillors I recently raised this issue with the school. I was asked to collate the support of lots of parents so I have develop this petition:

This is of the upmost importance as the road is very busy with traffic and all of us who travel to and from the primary school, nursery and park need the highest of road safety. The council have worked in partnership with the University of Liverpool to add a crossing for students to access Greenbank Park because the road crossing there is dangerous. Do we not all believe that our children deserve the same level of safety?
