Save Accident and Emergency in Darlington

We the undersigned object to any proposal to close the Accident and Emergency Facilities at Darlington Memorial Hospital. We call on the local NHS Trusts to re-open facilities at Bishop Auckland and Hartlepool as existing A and E Departments are unable to cope.

Why is this important?

There are 181 Accident and Emergency Departments in England and Wales. There is a plan to reduce that number to only 70 Major Emergency Departments. There may be as few as 40. This plan must be stopped. We must keep all of our A and Es..Darlington is in danger of losing the Accident and Emergency Department designation.

How it will be delivered

Deliver in person and stage a press conference.

The 10,000 on line signatures landmark was reached sometime on 29th Dec 2017. What a great Christmas Present that was. Thank you. We have almost 1500 signatures on paper too thanks mostly to shop workers and shop owners in Cleveland Terrace and Pierremont Crescent Darlington. So the combined total is now over 11,500 signatures.

The milestone of 6000 on line signatures was achieved this weekend. We have another 1000 names on paper. This is an amazing success. We all know we can go on.

Thank you to everyone who has signed the petition. We achieved our target and we achieved our objective of raising a very important issue. A legal challenge in the courts is all that can stop this change.

Please remember we have 1500 names as well on a traditional paper petition. You should add 1500 names to the running total on this site.

I hope these people are going to explain the difference between an A and E and an Emergency Department. They are the ones who put the whopping great four foot high signs above the door.

If you google Sir Bruce Keogh up pop references to Lord Darzi. Lord Darzi was responsible for a report which dealt with the closure of A and E at Hartlepool.

Please look at pg 9 of the document Right First Time 24/7 on the County Durham and Darlington NHS Trust website. Described there is a two tier system a summary of Sir Bruce Keogh's proposals..

I have been to Stockton this morning and the all the signs there are saying Accident and Emergency. I cannot find a sign there either which says Emergency Department. Here 's hoping when the new hospital opens at Wynyard they have a full A and E for local people.

Please remember we have 1500 names on a paper petition already so when looking at the running total on line you should also add 1500 to it.

We have one sign only on one of our many routes into Darlington. There are no signs using the words Accident and Emergency or the symbols A and E on or in the hospital grounds I can find. Shouldn't we be advertising the presence of an A and E Department just as they do in neighbouring towns? Why is the department at Darlington called an Emergency Department not an A and E?
