Save Our Beach

Save Our Beach

Designate the shingle beach and grassed area beside the river Cocker at the former youth hostel in Cockermouth as open access land under the provisions of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

Why is this important?

There has been public access to this popular local bathing spot for generations. Now the council want to sell the former youth hostel and surrounding land, including the beach and grassy areas, for private development. We feel that this area is an important community asset much loved by locals and visitors alike, and that public access to the riverside area must be preserved in perpetuity for future generations.

Reasons for signing

  • To enable future generations to enjoy this beautiful spot
  • It is very important that public places are preserved for the pleasure and enjoyment of the present and future generations. To much public land has already been swallowed up making it a preserve of the few rather than the many. We must hang on to what remains.
  • Leaving public access to this isn't much to ask! Leave things as they are.
