Save The Stables!

We are pleased that last night Milton Keynes Council’s Development Control Committee decided that planning permission for new housing on our western boundary would be subject to a deed of easement, despite the site being carved up.

Councillors on the committee talked about the value of The Stables to Milton Keynes and their desire to protect us into the future. The chair stated that the public attendance was unprecedented with over 200 supporters squeezing into the public gallery in a statement of solidarity. Support was also demonstrated through 875 letters of objection and a petition of more than 22,000.

Members of the committee agreed that there remained a risk that residents would be subject to noise from the music venue or its site and insisted that the conditions be imposed on the new application.

Thank you for all of your support.

Save The Stables!

Please reject the latest planning application for new housing (19/01357/REM) - submitted by Abbey Homes - on the western boundary of The Stables in Wavendon, Milton Keynes.

Why is this important?

If this application is approved, it will seriously threaten the future of The Stables, one of the UK's most popular and successful music venues.

Founded by the world-renowned jazz musicians Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine almost 50 years ago, The Stables (registered charity 261645) has welcomed many of the world's leading artists and performers to its stages. In addition to more than 400 concerts each year, it offers a wide-ranging programme of educational workshops and courses to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to develop their musical skills. Its dedicated team of more than 250 volunteers was recently honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. The Stables also produces IF: Milton Keynes International Festival, one of the UK's fastest-growing arts festivals.

If the proposed housing development is approved by Milton Keynes Council, previous protections which had been hard fought for will disappear, leading to the possibility of noise complaints from residents of the new homes and ultimately to the closure of this much-loved cultural asset.

We need to make the Council fully aware of the local, regional and national support for The Stables and also of the strong opposition to any housing development that threatens its future.

Please sign this petition today and ensure your voice is heard loud and clear!

Reasons for signing

  • Trying to raise the profile as we need to start a new campaign as an appeal has been started!
  • Theatre provides great service in the community. If it goes you end up with bricks and metal I.e. houses and cars.
  • Great venue. Charity run. If we loose The Stables it will be one less place to go for great entertainment.

Updates

2020-01-04 01:35:34 +0000

After securing the necessary conditions at the Development Control Committee hearing on 1 August we are disappointed that the Developers, Abbey Homes have decided to submit a CLOPUD application requesting that Milton Keynes Council confirms that carrying out the development without complying with condition 14 (the requirement for a deed of easement) will be lawful.

We hope and trust that Councillors will continue to uphold their previous commitment to safeguarding The Stables. If you are able to attend the meeting, your support would be most welcome. The committee meets on Thursday 9 January at 7pm in the Council Chamber, Civic, 1 Saxon Gate East, Milton Keynes, MK9 3EJ.

Hello from The Stables!

We have learnt that Planning Officers at Milton Keynes Council are recommending that the latest planning application by Abbey Homes to build houses on our western boundary should be approved - without the need for a Deed of Easement to be included - thus removing a vital legal protection that would help to protect the venue's long-term future from noise complaints.

Please read our latest update by following the link below and if you are able to do so, attend the next meeting of the Council's Development Control Committee where the Officers' recommendation will be considered. The meeting, which is open to the public, takes place on Thursday 1 August at 7pm at the Civic Offices, 1 Saxon Gate, Milton Keynes, MK9 3EJ. Please come along and demonstrate to the Councillors the strength of local, regional and national feeling opposing the latest housing plans.

Many thanks again for your support.
