To: Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs & National Museum of Scotland

Save the Viking Hoard for Galloway

Galloway's Viking Hoard should be displayed in the local area and not be lost to Edinburgh. A crucial decision will be made about where this treasure will be displayed on 23 March 2017, so please add your name urgently to our petition.

Why is this important?

The magnificent Galloway Viking Hoard, buried in the region’s soil 1,000 years ago for safekeeping, should have its home in Kirkcudbright’s new art gallery. We are calling on Fiona Hyslop to help make sure this happens and The National Museum of Scotland to agree. This would be good for tourism and the economy in a region that has suffered greatly in recent years and would make Scotland’s 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology something to celebrate.

Reasons for signing

  • its heritage
  • I signed to encourage people to visit Kirkcudbrightshire to view the Viking hoard among other historical items and art.
  • The decision by SAFAP to allocate the Hoard to NMS is a political move. Having dealt with SAFAP for years, I know how it works, and the decision was a foregone conclusion. You can appeal, and if you do, make it a very public appeal. I doubt the QR will change her mind, but it's worth a try.
