Stop the Government blocking UK wind farms

Stop blocking onshore wind energy projects, which have previously received planning approval from local councils or the planning inspectorate.

Why is this important?

The UK wind industry now employs nearly 20,000 people and frequently exports more power to the grid than gas power stations. Costs are coming down, employment is going up and wind is reducing our consumption of fossil fuels.

The Government's own public attitude surveys show that wind has high levels of public support, significantly above that for fossil fuel generation, fracking and nuclear.

We in the UK have recently seen significant climate change induced weather events, toxic levels of air pollution and we now also face threats to our gas supply due to the Ukraine crisis. Now is not the time for the Government to be putting the brakes on the most cost effective form of 'green' generation, particularly in the light of the latest IPPC reports highlighting the huge threat posed to us all by climate change. We need much more renewable generation now for the sake of future generations, as any climatologist will tell you!

Onshore wind is the cheapest form of renewable energy we have, and is cheaper than new nuclear.
Cutting onshore wind is bad for UK employment as around 19,000 people are currently employed by the UK’s onshore wind industry, a figure which was predicted to grow significantly.
A report from the Royal Academy of Engineering earlier this month, concluded that limiting onshore wind will increase our reliance on more expensive technologies to keep the lights on, our dependency on costly and unsecure fossil fuel imports and therefore our exposure to price hikes.

It may also be a bad move electorally for the Government as it’s own surveys consistently show that around two thirds of voters back onshore wind, and voters of all parties would prefer it as a neighbour to fossil fuel technologies such as shale gas.

In the same breath the Government is planning to simplify the process for fracking under other peoples land, and putting in pipelines to export the oil and gas it produces, again across other peoples land... (with or without their permission). The government has put a significant emphasis on the costs to consumers of subsidies to onshore wind (£6 per household in 2011), but neglects to compare and contrast this with the significant subsidies fracking is receiving through generous tax breaks and the relaxation of environmental controls.

Not to mention the astronomical costs of addressing climate change...

Well, today the true (non green) colours of the majority party in the coalition came out - they effectively want to stop onshore wind in it's tracks if they wind the election to the delight of the Daily Mail and Telegraph.
