Consent to a commercial use as a hotel/spa at Caverswall Castle to fund its ongoing preservation costs, create jobs and maintain the historic building.
Why is this important?
Caverswall Castle is an historical Grade-I listed property dating back to the 13th century.
Only 2.5% of listed buildings have Grade-I status i.e. they are of "exceptional interest". The majority, such as country houses and the historic royal palaces, are put to use to generate revenue for their specialist maintenance and repair. 97% of all grade-I listed buildings operate commercially.
SMDC planning need to be made aware of the support for such a hotel/spa use within the local population, and that a commercial future is in the local communities and Castles best interests.
The Castle is suffering serious neglect due to lack of use, and funds to maintain.
Without permission to put Caverswall Castle to use and generate much needed funds for urgent repairs and preservation, this important piece of Staffordshire's heritage is at serious risk of decay and decline.
