Replace value added tax (VAT) with carbon added tax (CAT).

Why is this important?

This will be the best way of reducing the carbon footprint of the UK and contributing to limiting the dangerous temperature rise for our world highlighted by the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The rate should be set such that the government's tax take does not change but those that make environmentally good choices will pay less tax while others will pay more. As our carbon emissions reduce, the rate will have to increase, increasing the incentive on individuals to reduce their carbon footprint even further.

A healthy diet is one way to reduce our carbon footprint. A change to CAT would bring about many benefits. This would help to ensure a healthy planet for our descendants.
