Ban the use of stink pits in England

Hello and thank you for supporting our petition to ban stink pits.

Liz Ballard, Chief Executive of Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust submitted the petition with a covering letter to Michael Gove in December 2018. We received a reply from Defra on 2 January 2019.

Unfortunately the response only briefly mentions stink pits and refers more generally to the use of snares. Although the reply is disappointing, you have helped us to raise this important issue with the Government and increase public awareness, which we will continue to do wherever we identify suitable opportunities. Hello and thanks to all that signed at Sheffield Hen Harrier Day or since our last update - we've gained over 450 signatures, a fantastic result! However, as our petition has now been running for six months we'll shortly bring it to a close and submit it to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

We'll close the petition on Monday 3 September, so please help us gain as many signatures as possible by once again sharing the petition and asking your friends and family to sign. Since our last update we have responded to Defra's consultation on 'Implementation of the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards' with reference to this petition - so every signature will help demonstrate the strength of feeling on this issue within our response to a Government assessment on the use of traps and standards for the welfare of trapped animals in the UK.

The Government currently has an open consultation on traps and the welfare of trapped animals - the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) - which closes on Monday 30th April. We're going to refer to this petition in our response, so we'd like to get as many signatures as possible to demonstrate the strength of public feeling for a ban on stink pits.
