Ban the use of stink pits in England

This campaign has ended.

Ban stink pits - bins or holes dug out by gamekeepers who fill them with rotting carcasses of discarded game birds, as well as other wild and domestic animals.

Why is this important?

Stink pits are fenced enclosures, bins or holes dug out by gamekeepers who then fill them with rotting carcasses of discarded game birds, as well as other wild and domestic animals in order to attract target species such as foxes in to a large quantity of snares.

In this photo, taken on a Sheffield moor, it appears that ‘non-target’ species are being repeatedly captured - in this case mountain hares. The current approach to managing the Sheffield moors appears to be having a significant and detrimental effect on the local mountain hare population.

This excessive use of snares by gamekeepers does not follow DEFRA's code of practice on the use of snares, or the industry's good practice guidance (e.g. BASC) of "quality over quantity". This is why we are calling for a ban on stink pits.

How it will be delivered

The petition will finally be delivered to Michael Gove. We also referred to it in our response to the Government's Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) consultation which closed on Monday 30th April . Every signature will make a difference in demonstrating the strength of public feeling for a ban on stink pits, so please help us by signing and sharing our petition.

Hello and thank you for supporting our petition to ban stink pits.

Liz Ballard, Chief Executive of Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust submitted the petition with a covering letter to Michael Gove in December 2018. We received a reply from Defra on 2 January 2019.

Unfortunately the response only briefly mentions stink pits and refers more generally to the use of snares. Although the reply is disappointing, you have helped us to raise this important issue with the Government and increase public awareness, which we will continue to do wherever we identify suitable opportunities. We will also continue to monitor our local area for stink pits and snares through the Trust’s Our Moors campaign: https://www.wildsheffield.com/campaign/our-moors/

If you like to continue supporting us on this issue, please consider joining Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust: https://www.wildsheffield.com/join-us/

Thank you for your support.

Hello and thanks to all that signed at Sheffield Hen Harrier Day or since our last update - we've gained over 450 signatures, a fantastic result! However, as our petition has now been running for six months we'll shortly bring it to a close and submit it to Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

We'll close the petition on Monday 3 September, so please help us gain as many signatures as possible by once again sharing the petition and asking your friends and family to sign. It would be fantastic to reach 4000 signatures to demonstrate the strength of feeling on this issue to the Government https://you.38degrees.org.uk/p/stinkpits

Thanks so much to everyone that has signed, shared and promoted our petition.

Since our last update we have responded to Defra's consultation on 'Implementation of the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards' with reference to this petition - so every signature will help demonstrate the strength of feeling on this issue within our response to a Government assessment on the use of traps and standards for the welfare of trapped animals in the UK.

We will continue our campaign for stink pits to be banned - please keep on helping us by sharing and promoting our petition: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/p/stinkpits

For more information about other ways you can help us to end wildlife persecution and intensive moorland management practices like stink pits, please visit our website: http://www.wildsheffield.com/ourmoors

Thank you to everyone that has signed our petition.

The Government currently has an open consultation on traps and the welfare of trapped animals - the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) - which closes on Monday 30th April. We're going to refer to this petition in our response, so we'd like to get as many signatures as possible to demonstrate the strength of public feeling for a ban on stink pits.

Please can you share the petition link below on social media and ask your friends and family to sign it too?
