A petition against the proposed location of a new waste water treatment works on the island of Seil.

We do not believe that the proposed site is in an appropriate location and an alternative site should be considered.

Why is this important?

The siting of the proposed works is in an area designated in the local plan as Sensitive Countryside. The site is currently undisturbed by vehicles or high numbers of people and is a home, hunting ground and corridor for many animals including several rare birds such as hen harriers. The construction and subsequent operation of a WWTW in this position would run counter to this important designation, which helps to protect open countryside from harmful development. There are other sites which would appear more suitable due to being outside of the Sensitive Countryside area and closer to existing roads.

The definition of sensitive countryside is: a development control zone which, under the Argyll and Bute Structure Plan comprises countryside and mainly undeveloped coast intermediate between, on the one hand the very sensitive countryside and, on the other hand the rural opportunity areas and countryside around settlements; within this zone there is a general capacity to successfully accommodate small scale development on infill, rounding-off and redevelopment but only limited capacity for open countryside development.

How it will be delivered

If there is support for the proposal the petition will be emailed to Scottish Water employees concerned with the decision making process, including board members.

We have received a response to our petition from Douglas Millican, the CEO of Scottish Water. His email (reproduced in full below) makes it clear that Scottish Water have a great deal more faith in the stakeholder process employed than some of us and there is still much more work to be done to overturn their decision.
This campaign is just starting, we will fight the siting of this large sewage works in such a pristine location and we will win!

Today this petition, along with a paper petition was emailed to the CEO of Scottish Water, Douglas Millican and other Scottish Water employees. Those involved in setting up the petition would like to thank everyone who cared enough about Seil Island to take the time to sign up and we would welcome further signatures. Any response to our concerns from Scottish Water will be posted here.

As we are approaching the time for Scottish Water to submit their planning application we are having one final push to try to achieve our 200 signature target. This would be an incredible achievement for such a small island and would send the strong message that many of the local population do not support this solution. Please share this link to any neighbours, relatives or friends who share our view and who have not yet signed the petition.
