We do not believe that the proposed site is in an appropriate location and an alternative site should be considered.
Why is this important?
The siting of the proposed works is in an area designated in the local plan as Sensitive Countryside. The site is currently undisturbed by vehicles or high numbers of people and is a home, hunting ground and corridor for many animals including several rare birds such as hen harriers. The construction and subsequent operation of a WWTW in this position would run counter to this important designation, which helps to protect open countryside from harmful development. There are other sites which would appear more suitable due to being outside of the Sensitive Countryside area and closer to existing roads.
The definition of sensitive countryside is: a development control zone which, under the Argyll and Bute Structure Plan comprises countryside and mainly undeveloped coast intermediate between, on the one hand the very sensitive countryside and, on the other hand the rural opportunity areas and countryside around settlements; within this zone there is a general capacity to successfully accommodate small scale development on infill, rounding-off and redevelopment but only limited capacity for open countryside development.
