Ban Dangerous Pesticides in Cheltenham

Please ban the spraying of Monsanto's Roundup and other glyphosate herbicides on our streets and parks.

Why is this important?

The use of glyphosates has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. It is not acceptable that ourselves, our children and the animals we share our community with are being routinely exposed to these chemicals whether we like it or not.

This is a matter of great importance for those of us who care about each other's health and the health of our children, our cats, our dogs and all the flora and fauna of this city, of course including our beloved bees.

"Monsanto seems to have finally been caught red handed, as the New York Times reports that new evidence has come into play. On Tuesday, a federal court released the "Monsanto Papers" – 250 pages of internal correspondence proving explicitly that Monsanto was aware of the toxicity of glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, the most widely used weed killer in the world."

See below for a SumofUs campaign to stop glyphosates. Whilst it would be heartwarming to get enough signatures on this petition to present to Cheltenham Council, we can all pull together in other ways to get this off our streets. If you haven't already, please sign and share from the link below. Please also consider resharing this campaign too. Many thanks. Katie https://actions.sumofus.org/a/stop-glyphosate?source=campaigns

Glyphosate is the world’s most widely sold weedkiller, commonly found in Monsanto’s Roundup, and we’re fighting to ban it as a pre-harvest treatment. Glyphosate is sprayed on our wheat and other cereals just before harvest – mainly to allow machines to go a little faster. From there it follows the grain into our bread; recent testing by the Defra Committee on Pesticide Residues in Food (PRiF) found that almost two thirds of wholemeal bread sampled contained glyphosate. Supermarkets and bread manufacturers say this is quite OK as Roundup is usually below official safety levels. See The Soil Association's report here https://www.soilassociation.org/blogs/2017/january/glyphosate-weedkiller-causes-liver-disease/?_cldee=a2F0aWVfbWF1Z2hmbGluZ0B5YWhvby5jby51aw%3d%3d&recipientid=contact-13eaa5447205e61180c8005056ad0bd4-67e48100da384f1fa42ed32a39bb1587&utm_source=ClickDimensions&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=E-news%3A%20Jan%202017&esid=8cc7d315-7bd6-e611-80ce-005056ad0bd4&urlid=1

Monsanto have been given another 18 months for trials. This means glyphosates are still available for use for the next year and a half.

Renfrewshire Council voted unanimously this afternoon to phase out the use of glyphosate pesticides, and move as quickly as possible towards using safer and greener alternatives.

Link to the latest info I can find on the vote re the glyphosate licence by EU. Great quote at the end by Avaaz:
“Despite the UK and the European commission lining up to protect Monsanto’s interests, governments across Europe have refused to treat their people as lab rats and approve a new licence for glyphosate,” said Alice Jay, the campaign director of Avaaz, which organised the petition. She added that the group would like to see glyphosate itself banned, rather than just co-formulants.

Thank you to everyone who is providing more information and links regarding this issue. Many thanks to Michelle T. for the following...
Here is a link to the analysis of Glyphosate from the University of Herts, there is also an interesting breakdown on the characteristics of Glyphosate in this report on pages 23-25: http://genok.no/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/010615_GENOK-HTIntactaBrazil-FINAL_web.pdf

Although the report from the Centre for Biosafety in Norway looks at Glyphosate use in relation to 'Genetically Modified Herbicide Tolerant Crops' it highlights worrying information such as how long glyphosate actually stays in the soil (much longer than the supposed safe time given between spraying and harvest) see page 25 for more details.
