Guild Wheel: Ben Ashworth Way

19/07/17 - We Won

Got a result - Councillor up for it - Announced on radio that council are up for it

In view of Ben Ashworth's achievements - I would like the council to strongly consider naming a stretch of the Guild Wheel "BEN ASHWORTH WAY".

Maybe the stretch between Broadgate and the Docks which was often run by Ben (See note on update)

Why is this important?

Ben Ashworth is a hero and an inspiration. I was so sad to read that he passed away earlier today. Despite being diagnosed with ‘Terminal’ bowel cancer, Ben did not give up but fought it all the way – raising well over a quarter of a million pounds for cancer charities. Not through sympathy but through sheer bloody determination.

In his last few years Ben ran over 24 marathons – he ran round the Guild Wheel in Preston twice in one day and for three years he organised ‘Cheeky Santa Dashes’ in Preston – persuading all and sundry to do a lap of the Avenham and Miller Parks wearing special shorts that had plastic backside cheeks protruding from the rear.

All this to not only raise a fantastic amount of money, but also to raise awareness of this cruel disease. Read the blog - https://bensbowelmovements.com/

BEN ASHWORTH PETITION NEWS.
Good News - I've submitted the petition today. The Beeb came to interview me this afternoon - and Peter Rankin the Labour Leader of Preston Council had some very encouraging news. You can hear this 1:23 into the programme. Starts with Bens Dad then Bens Oncologist then me then Peter. I'd be a fraud to take all the credit here - reading between Peter's line I'm fairly certain that he and his colleagues - Particularly Councillor Peter Kelly (Labour , Riversway) already had something in mind. But thanks to all 3060+ of you who signed - we can all take comfort in the fact that our 30 seconds of effort have given 'Power to the Councils elbow' and gone someway to ensuring that our inspirational colleague will be remembered in the city.

Below is a message from Luke Bosman ([email protected]) about your petition Ben Ashworth Way
I think your campaign is almost marvellous. However, the stretch of Guild Wheel you refer to is already named Mike Atkins Way in honour of one of the two chaps who was responsible for the Guild Wheel project and who died in 2013. May I suggest that you campaign for a different stretch to be named after Ben? The stretch between Broadgate and the Docks, for example, was often run by Ben.
