Keep Sheffield’s Library Theatre

To guarantee the continued provision and maintenance of a theatre that is owned by, and available to, the people of Sheffield in the heart of the city centre.

Why is this important?

The Library Theatre is a 260 seat Art Deco theatre which is unique amongst the theatres of Sheffield.
It is the only theatre owned by, and belonging to the residents of Sheffield. Sheffield groups perform there and Sheffield people make up the audience. It is “The People’s Theatre.” It is home to an eclectic mix of amateur theatre, youth theatre, dance, music, local primary schools and an extensive range of professional touring companies including Doc/Fest and Tramlines
It provides our residents the opportunity to go to the theatre at a reasonable cost. It is visited by thousands of Sheffield residents every year and is regarded by those who use it as “our theatre.”
It is ideally placed for those reliant on public transport and, for many, it is the only time they visit the City Centre in the evening.
And if it goes? All the activities it supports will go with it. It will be a body blow to the cultural identity of the city. It mustn’t be allowed to happen.
If a new Central Library is built, it is vital that a new theatre is part of the plan. It’s time for SCC to give the Library Theatre users the same guarantee they have given to the users of the Library and Graves Art Gallery.
