A closed and abandoned railway line is dismal; it’s a symbol of an area ignored. But most who live near a railway station points to it with pride. Pride brings energy, energy brings opportunities, opportunities bring prosperity; all energised by the possibilities of a reopened railway.
The story of Dr Beeching’s dismembering has never been adequately explored from social and cultural aspects, but these values are surely the most important to us as humans.
This strategic freight route to the port of Stranraer should never have been closed in the first place. Putting major rail links back will assist in decarbonising the economy.
This line should never have been closed. It meant that to reach Dumfries from Stranraer you had to travel up to Kilmarnock to come back down to Dumfries adding a lot more time and mileage to your journey.
