#KeepTheGrants - Save Student Support Maintenance Grants

Grants given to the poorest university students have been cut and turned into loans as part of savings that the Department for Business has to find, please sign this petition to challenge this from happening.

Why is this important?

Many Students are going to be priced out of education if this grant is cut, many students will not be able to go, or be faced with enormous debt and will feel frightened of the huge lifetime loans. This grant is a lifeline for poorer students.

There are students who have worked hard, they’ve got the grades and now they don’t know whether they’ll be able to go to university. Even if they worked part time whilst studying, it still would not be enough money to live on.

Please sign and share so we can stop this madness and help our next generations of students become wonderful teachers, scientists, doctors, etc. Education is for people from all walks of life not just rich people. Being poor should not be a trap preventing a university education.

We are one of the richest nations in the world, stopping student maintenance grants would be catastrophic for many generations to come, curbing our future development as a country by not investing in young people. This is the wrong place for the government to make savings.

How it will be delivered

I will present the signatures and any messages received to the Current education secretary also to the Prime Minister Mr David Cameron. Then I will forward copies of the petition to shadow education secretaries of all opposing political parties.

The campaign to stop the government scrapping maintenance grants is getting stronger. Thank you for signing my petition and adding to the noise. There are hundreds of people around the UK meeting face to face with their MPs to show their strength of feeling and demand the proposals are stopped. We have been working with the National Union of Students to arrange a UK wide lobby and you can help pile on the pressure from home by tweeting your MP directly.

Thank you,

Almost 40,000 signatures and a wave of press is beginning to build. Thank you all so much for pledging your support and I hope in the coming weeks we can build upon it to launch a national demonstration and action days to show this government how WRONG the decision to scrap grants is. Collectively, with our combined strong voices, we can make a real difference - so please share the petition and ask your friends and family to sign it and pledge their support too.

Together, we can #KeepTheGrants

Yours,

Dave Cocozza and Jan Pearson

I have just watched the budget, and the news students were dreading was confirmed. Please still sign and share this petition and it can be challenged in parliament. I have a meeting with my MP Ed Milliband on the 17th September and plan to show him the petition. Why should students in this country start their lives with huge debts when other countries offer free and very low education fees. Please lets fight this cut and oppose it together. Thank you to all the people who have signed already and to those who are suffering with today's news, please do not loose heart and know you are each so very important and you have worked hard to get to where you are, stay strong.

A huge thank you for all of you that have supported this petition so far, there is a lot of support and honest comments on here about how we feel. We need to reach the goal of at least 100,000 signatures so the government can not ignore this social injustice, please keep sharing and spreading the word so people sign this and together we can make a difference.
