  • In support of Diversity's BGT performance
The closing of the petition was preempted by the decision of OfCom to not humour the complainants by punishing or admonishing ITV for the broadcasting of the performance by Diversity. The petition was submitted to OfCom, nonetheless, and I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who signed I have no doubt that the existence of of these various petitions will have influenced OfCom to come to the right decision

  • Boycott Riverford Organics until all hunting is stopped on Riverford land.
Great news, after running a campaign for 48 hours, 38 Degrees members have put enough pressure on Riverford farm to ban fox-hunting from all Riverford land, not just the land run by the organic veg company. Read more here: http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/2014/10/20/riverford-fox-hunting-victory/

  • Post Office Scandal: Strip Paula Vennells of her CBE
09/01/24 - We did it! Ex-Post Office boss Paula Vennells has bowed to our 1.2 million strong petition and will hand back her CBE with immediate effect. She said she was “truly sorry for the devastation caused to the subpostmasters and their families” and that she as continuing to support and co-operate with the inquiry into the scandal. She added: “I am, however, aware of the calls from sub-postmasters and others to return my CBE. I have listened and I confirm that I return my CBE with immediate effect.” David Smith, who started this petition said: "Thank you to each and every person who has signed this petition. It has been a catalyst for action allowing us to have a voice and is hopefully a first historic step on the path to the victims of the Post Office scandal getting the justice they deserve." “To me, the removal of the CBE is just the start. The ultimate goal is for the subpostmasters to get the justice they deserve. In many ways, this is symbolic, but it is a massive symbol." “What I’m hoping is that as soon as somebody as senior as her is held accountable at this level, it will start a domino effect that will lead to the justice and compensation that everyone affected deserves.” You can read more about the story here https://home.38degrees.org.uk/2024/01/09/post-office-scandal-win-paula-vennells-hands-back-cbe-but-fight-for-justice-goes-on/ In other news a new petition has been started calling for Alan Bates to be honoured for his role in exposing the Post Office scandal. • Save York Station Ticket Office and Staffing Levels.
01/01/18 We Won! I wanted to share the good news with you that Virgin have listened to customers concerns and that their plans to revamp the station will include retaining a traditional ticket office. I think this shows the effectiveness of "people power". The local paper published an article about the petition after it was launched in July and another article about the successful outcome on Monday, 1st January. http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/15798711.Campaigners_welcome_ticket_office_U_turn/

  • Give a home to asylum seekers in York
UPDATE: 17/09/15 We have handed in our petition yesterday and with over 1300 signatures it felt great. What seemed like a lot of empty words, by our head of York Council Chris Steward, was challenged and questioned by other 38degrees members and myself. Last night the council announced to take on 60 refugees over the next five years. A great start but we still need to keep behind it to make sure we start acting now and not only within the next five years. We also asked Councillor Steward as our representative to the government to push for quick action which will take place now and won't be delayed longer. He told us the answer to most of the questions will be he doesn't know yet. So let's keep up the good work to make sure actions speak louder than words. Here is a picture of the handover yesterday: https://www.flickr.com/photos/7617572@N07/21455441602/in/photostream/ A press article regarding the handover: http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/13738936.1_200_sign_petition_calling_for_York_to_do_more_to_help_refugees/ And the link to my interview on BBC Radio York yesterday morning. Listen to it at about 1h13mins in: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p031cr16#play Thank you again so much for your support. The petition would have been nothing without you! All the best, Alice

  • PROTECT NHS CHILDREN'S SERVICES IN BRISTOL & SOUTH GLOS FROM PRIVATISATION
UPDATE - 12/01/15 - children’s community health services and the inpatient adolescent mental health unit in Bristol have, for now, been saved from privatisation! This is a massive victory for both NHS services in Bristol and the rest of the country. It shows what can be done when service users, staff, members of the public and councillors and MP's work together to hold the public bodies who make decisions about our NHS to account and let them know what we want for our health services.

  • Come clean and show us the contract
As you'll see from the last update, the County Council accidentally left a PDF of the contract on their website which could be unredacted if converted to a word processing file. This got out into the public domain and is still (as far as I know) viewable online, although the council have of course replaced it on their site. So an accidental win!
