  • Stop oil exploration in Cardigan Bay Marine SAC
Dear friends, family and supporters I am very pleased to inform you that Eni UK have announced that they have suspended any plans to carry out seismic testing in Cardigan bay Marine SAC due to the overwhelming public outcry. This is an amazing victory however we will have to watch them closely as previous attempts were slipped through at very short notice so we will have to be vigilant. Thank you all so much for your support and please keep signing and sharing as I still intend to deliver the petition at the end of the week to demonstrate the massive public sentiment and ensure that the UK Government think twice before making rash and reckless decisions such as this.

  • Halt salmon industry expansion around Arran!
25/03/21 We are delighted to share breaking news that the Millstone Point salmon battery farm application has been REJECTED! The North Ayrshire Council Planning Committee has just concluded their discussion of the application by the "Scottish" Salmon Company; the councillors voted unanimously to refuse the proposal. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported on this long journey. There may yet be more chapters to this saga if the decision is appealed by the applicant; but for now we celebrate this momentous decision which rightly acknowledges the special qualities of this area and the vital importance of Arran's natural environment to our wellbeing and economy. With very best wishes, Russ Cheshire on behalf of all the Friends of Millstone Point.

  • STOP MOORSIDE: "Biggest Nuclear Development in Europe"
11/11/18 THANKS TO ALL who have campaigned to raise the alarm about the diabolic plan for 3 reactors on green fields near to Sellafield. The Guardian and other press have reported that: ““Toshiba recognises that the economically rational decision is to withdraw from the UK nuclear power plant construction project, and has resolved to take steps to wind-up NuGen,” Toshiba statement. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/nov/08/toshiba-uk-nuclear-power-plant-project-nu-gen-cumbria ‘NuGen’ is saying it is pulling out of Cumbria and the inference is that is with immediate effect as Toshiba looks to divest completely from nuclear activity. That is brilliant! BUT Toshiba should be made to clear up its mess.

  • Give Legal Protection against Cruelty to Crustaceans
10/04/22 VICTORY! THE ANIMAL WELFARE (SENTIENCE) BILL HAS NOW BEEN PASSED BY PARLIAMENT. THEREFORE, THE AMENDMENT ASKING THAT DECAPOD CRUSTACEANS AND CEPHALOPODS SHOULD BE RECOGNISED AS BEING SENTIENT HAS BECOME LAW! Thank you for all your support over the years. Your voices have made a substantial difference during this long struggle. Let us hope this is a step towards a kinder Britain. This will not only be better for animals but also for humans as well. After all, kindness is its own reward, something substantiated not least by modern psychology. However, we cannot rest on our laurels. Although this is a major step forward, it will be necessary to change the rules and regulations controlling how these animals are treated. This should now be much easier. We must also change how other invertebrates are treated like, for example, bivalves such as scallops, oysters and mussels. Millions of scallops, for instance, are caught by UK vessels each year. So, we may be asking for your support again sometime in the future. Still, none of this should take away from this major step forward in UK law With kind regards, as always, Peter (The Shellfish Network)

  • SOUTHERN WATER ABSTRACTION OF RIVERS TEST, ITCHEN AND CANDOVER
15/04/18 We Won! Further to your truly amazing support we've achieved a very positive outcome! The HUGEST thanks from Howard and I - this result would not have happened without you! Jim & Howard. A public inquiry called by the Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Gove concluded on 27th March with a formal agreement to restrict the amount of water Southern Water is allowed to abstract from the world famous chalk rivers Test and Itchen. The company has not only abandoned its longstanding plans for a £50 million pipeline that could have transferred up to 45 million litres of water a day from the River Test to the Itchen but has also now agreed to tight restrictions on the more limited transfer it had proposed at the start of the inquiry.

  • Supermarket CEOs, hand back the cash!
We did it! We got supermarkets to do the right thing and hand back their business rates relief back to the government. In total, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Asda, Morrisons, and Aldi, are returning £2bn in relief money. Though this money should never have been given to them in the first place, our win proves that by piling on the pressure, we can hold these big businesses to account. And that's not all: we've also influenced how other big retailers handle their relief money. This is huge. By showing support for this campaign, you've played an important role in how we recover from this crisis. Now that we've had £2bn handed back, we need to see this money distributed to the right causes. When we clapped for carers and other essential workers, we weren’t thinking of supermarket CEOs or shareholders, but the thousands of people working on shop floors around the country who took the greatest risks to keep the rest of us safe and well-supplied.
