  • Stop Costa Coffee from hurting Bella's
25/12/20 Some good news for the Christmas and New Year period! Costa have changed their mind about moving into the old ticket office and are not planning to move in at this time. So Sam and Maggie at Bella’s have a huge amount of worry and stress lifted from them. Costa eventually responded to Caroline Ansell, our MP and Christina Ewbank the CEO of the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce both of whom made independent representations to Costa. Costa’s letters had the same message – they are not planning to move into the Eastbourne Terminus. The reason they gave was the effect the COVID19 pandemic was having on rail travel so there was insufficient justification for opening up a new outlet. We will keep an eye on things next year so there is a need to remain vigilant. I am sure that Costa were well aware of the feelings of our community so our support added extra weight to all the letters sent to them. Our Mayor Steve Wallis also wrote to Costa and he may yet receive a reply from them. We had support from various companies in Eastbourne, councillors, David Ruddle of The Best of Eastbourne and, of course, The Eastbourne Herald gave us visibility through their regular reports. The thing that really makes me happy is how an extended community of people, companies, organisations, councillors, the Mayor and our MP can come together and speak with a strong voice. What I have learned (again!) is that if you look for the good things in a community, you will certainly find them. My warmest wishes to you for the Christmas period and the New Year. Don

  • Greener Grade II listed and conservation area homes
26/04/25 Back in 2022, you kindly signed our petition calling on Islington Council to simplify planning rules to allow more energy efficiency upgrades in listed and conservation area homes, for both owners and renters. For three years, thanks to your more than 2000 signatures, our campaign group has lobbied hard for the Council to modernise its approach and strike a better balance between conservation and energy efficiency. In the autumn, the Council will finally publish a brand new set of rules. Although progress has been slower than promised and the first draft document has been flawed, we are pleased that many of our recommendations for a more user-friendly and cost-effective approach to planning will be adopted. https://www.letstalk.islington.gov.uk/draft-climate-action-supplementary-planning-document It took a huge collective effort by residents and experts to get us this far. We are particularly grateful to Chris Procter, author of a seminal climate emergency conservation area toolkit, for his meticulous critiques of the council’s work and getting the council to rectify important gaps like accepting slimline vacuum glass for windows. Having got this far, it is now time to end our campaign. However, Chris Procter will continue to lead the way with both the Council and residents on all things retrofit. So if you wish to explore retrofit opportunities for your home please feel free to get in touch with him at [email protected] https://www.procter-rihl.com/ In other news, our co-founder Leyla Boulton was recently elected councillor for the City of London's Bassishaw ward, where she will continue to campaign for better and more sustainable use of buildings. In the meantime she’s thrilled to have installed solar panels on her roof in Islington. Thank you again for your support and happy retrofitting! • Keep Our SUBS* Public! [* Stroud's Subscription Rooms]
13/12/17 Well over a month since the launch of our campaign to keep Stroud Subscription Rooms in public hands, KOSP is delighted that Stroud District Council (SDC) has recently voted to opt for leasing the Sub Rooms rather than for a sale to the private sector. As far as it goes, this is a considerable victory. IT IS GREAT NEWS! STROUD HAS SUCCESSFULLY STOOD UP FOR THE SUBS! Thank you all so much for your support; as the excellent editorial in today’s Stroud News & Journal says, it was the people of Stroud – yourselves! – rising up with a united voice that turned things around, and in true Stroudie tradition! The people of Stroud can now focus on creating a progressive solution anchored in the diversity, skills and needs of our community. From our extensive campaigning it is clear that Stroud believes that through working together and collaboratively, we can meet the challenge of scarcity and austerity, making the Subs into a vibrant hub for arts and culture in the widest sense, for all the community.

  • List College Farm, Finchley, London on the Community Asset Register
09/03/19 - Success! "Thank You" to all of you for signing our petition to list College Farm as an Asset of Community Value. Last night the committee at Barnet Council met and unanimously agreed that the Farm should be listed. This is an important step in ensuring the farm stays as an open space for all and does not fall into the clutches of developers and is a great example of "People Power". This campaign has been run by the Finchley Society, our slogan is "We care for Finchley". If you like what we do why not visit our website at www.finchleysociety.org.uk. Thanks Michael Crick
