  • Give Legal Protection against Cruelty to Crustaceans
10/04/22 VICTORY! THE ANIMAL WELFARE (SENTIENCE) BILL HAS NOW BEEN PASSED BY PARLIAMENT. THEREFORE, THE AMENDMENT ASKING THAT DECAPOD CRUSTACEANS AND CEPHALOPODS SHOULD BE RECOGNISED AS BEING SENTIENT HAS BECOME LAW! Thank you for all your support over the years. Your voices have made a substantial difference during this long struggle. Let us hope this is a step towards a kinder Britain. This will not only be better for animals but also for humans as well. After all, kindness is its own reward, something substantiated not least by modern psychology. However, we cannot rest on our laurels. Although this is a major step forward, it will be necessary to change the rules and regulations controlling how these animals are treated. This should now be much easier. We must also change how other invertebrates are treated like, for example, bivalves such as scallops, oysters and mussels. Millions of scallops, for instance, are caught by UK vessels each year. So, we may be asking for your support again sometime in the future. Still, none of this should take away from this major step forward in UK law With kind regards, as always, Peter (The Shellfish Network)

  • Protect rural Hampshire: Stop the Barton Stacey Incinerator
Many of you will have seen the fantastic news that plans to build an incinerator at Barton Stacey have been scrapped. The MPs, campaign leaders, councillors, residents and others who have contested the plans, or have agitated and informed all deserve huge credit. As North West Hampshire MP Kit Malthouse - who campaigned against the plant alongside Caroline Nokes MP - said, “This is great news and a tribute to the community’s campaign against this project”. Thank you, too, for signing this petition that played a small part in illustrating our collective opposition.

  • Demand Randox Release Covid-19 Tests
7/4/20 Good news - people power has delivered! Randox, the Northern Ireland diagnostics company which has developed a rapid test to identify Covid-19, has confirmed it is no longer selling its tests online for a high price and is now working directly with the NHS. On Saturday it was confirmed the new NHS testing centre at SSE Arena in Belfast would be using Randox test kits. We need to remain vigilant, but because of you and thousands of others who took action when it was most needed, Randox have been forced to act. This much is clear right now: by coming together and taking a stand, we can force people in power to sit up and listen. Thank you for taking action. More power to you, Nicola, Act Now Coordinator (a collaboration between Uplift and 38 Degrees)

  • Declare a Climate Emergency
We won! The council caved in to pressure and the effort of so many people including about 900 in total who signed the petition both on and off line, to all our activists who braved the cold outside Highland Council buildings and particularly the hard work of Cllr Pippa Hadley submitting the amendment (seconded by Cllr Andrew Baxter) and declared a climate and ecological emergency and agreed to work towards a carbon neutral highlands by 2025. You can see the text agreed here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156397986577901&set=a.10150395819242901&type=3&theater Well done everyone. Now to get to work to help them achieve this!

  • Remove the BAN on running in the playground at Hillfort Primary School, Liskeard
Following the apparent U turn of the school, children WILL be permitted to continue running freely in the main playground, the early years playground in addition to the ball court! Whilst running in a specific area will be discouraged for safety reasons, to reduce injury of children running into one another, children will still be permitted to run. The school issued a statement via their Facebook page this evening following the launch of this petition & direct contact from the BBC. I would like to thank everyone for their signatures & support to bring about this apparent back pedal from what had been outlined in the newsletter that running will only be permitted 'in the ball court', in response to 'bad behaviour'. The statement can be viewed on their Facebook page. Our children WILL have the right & freedom to run freely during child led free play! Well done, fantastic outcome!
