Sustainable palm oil
Stop using unsustainable palm oil in food and other products. Rainforests are constantly being destroyed in order to plant new palm oil crops. Growers need to stop destroying the forests and just produce palm oil in areas where it is already growing. Switching to genuinely sustainable palm oil is safer than banning it altogether, as that would risk a change to another oil product that would also be environmentally damaging.
Why is this important?
The preservation of the remaining rainforest is vital for the health of the whole planet, for slowing climate change, and to provide habitats for many endangered species. A BBC2 programme on 10 May will show the attempt to save the orangutans of Borneo, where most of the world's palm oil is produced.
