Make Royals Pay for Palace Renovation

Campaign created by
Mark Johnson

Buckingham Palace is about to be given a £369m refurbishment. Tax payers are paying for it. The Crown and its estates should be made to fund its own renovations.

Why is this important?

There is a national housing crisis, the NHS is in crisis, austerity is forcing cuts in many front line services. Now the Royals expect us to dig deeper to refurbish Buckingham Palace. The Crown's wealth is inestimable. This is, in a word, outrageous.

Reasons for signing

  • The Royal family (bless'em!) are millionaires. It does not seem appropriate at at time when ordinary families, and important institutions (like the NHS) are struggling for the public to be expected to dig deeper for this.
  • Sorry, your highness, but this can't be allowed when so many of your subjects are suffering. If this were a time of prosperity then I'd have no problem with it, but as we've all Ben told by our Tory Government that we should be 'living within our means' and that we should stop this 'something for nothing mentality', I think it only fair and fitting that you lead by example.
  • In the context of the current crisis of social housing, this proposal is particularly abhorrent. If we lack the will to abolish it, we must modernise and scale back the monarchy now.
