STOP Privatising Community Spaces! HELP Save Old Tidemill School!
SAVE DEPTFORD, South East London's Collective of Creatives, wants Lewisham Council to block a devastating planning proposal that will replace Old Tidemill School - Deptford's hidden historical gem - with unnecessary and unaffordable new blocks of flats. We believe the council should work with us to make this a creative space providing studios and open to the public for exhibitions, events, classes... Deptford does NOT need anymore high rise luxury flats, but it IS in dire need of cultural projects that offers affordable community and studio spaces, and supports the thriving artistic scene to keep it alive.
Why is this important?
Preserving the creative hub that Old Tidemill School has become over the last four years is a fight which needs the local community and beyond to stand up to their council and demand cooperation with its inhabitants. Since losing its original function as a much-loved primary school, this building has been occupied by a group of innovative musicians, artists, community activists, gardeners, dancers, teachers, and students. The space has been filled with life, love, and community spirit. These inhabitants have put their passion into this great historical building, projecting it as a new space for artists of all fields to use as a creative environment to pursue any project or idea they have. It is a community building, a PUBLIC SPACE, and it must stay this way and not be converted into a three 2-6 storey PRIVATE residential blocks - which is what the new applications propose.
Not only will this further change the landscape and face of Deptford, a town steeped in the culture and history of southeast London, it will also alienate an entire creative community and destroy a great opportunity to work with and for them. This space plays a central part to Deptford's rich cultural life as it allows artists and creative individuals to unite in their local area and form this wide network of like minded people that all pass through the doors of Old Tidemill School. This type of affordable space is urgently needed in Deptford and they all will be pushed to leave the area they have been building up a close relationship with for 4 years. How it will be delivered
We will send all of the signatures to the Council to add to the community's mass objection to this private property development. We will also put the petition to them on the 24th February at a Public Meeting.
