Asperger Syndrome - Improve Healthcare Services in Derbyshire for Adults!

Once you get to 18+ years old and onwards, the long-term management with adults with developmental disorders, including asperger syndrome or even ADHD, is virtually non-exist any on the NHS in Derbyshire. Yet if a patient with Asperger Syndrome lives in Sheffield or Nottingham, the Aspergers adult patient would get a referral to the asperger syndrome NHS funded adult clinic team. This is not fair.

Why is this important?

We need to stop post coded lottery nhs support for those with High- Functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome. Derbyshire needs to take asperger syndrome as a real disorder, and start treating and managing the condition on the NHS. Because many of patients with mild autism/ asperger syndrome do not have a learning disability associated with aspergers diagnosis, then the adult cannot get specialized support from their nhs learning disability team. So where do adults with asperger syndrome go. Many adults with the condition then end up with mental health problems, like depression, on top of their aspergers diagnosis. This is not fair! Some asperger syndrome adult patients then end up thrown in the mental health service in Derbyshire, but asperger syndrome adults are not mentally ill, not can we treat the condition like mental illness - asperger syndrome cannot be cured and it is a long-term neurological developmental disorder. So adults with the condition needs specialist medical services, like specialist OT and speech therapy, specialized trained behavioral therapists and psychiatrists. Adults with mild autism and asperger syndrome are not being given a fair and personalized medical support in Derbyshire on the NHS, and this is scandalous.

I feel that those with mild learning difficulties or neurological-developmental disorders, like high functioning autism or asperger syndrome gets ignored. Even though I respect those with more challenging and severe learning disabilities such as severe autism or down syndrome, but society needs to take serious with those with mild disabilities as well. But oftern asperger syndrome is recognised as a disorder but sufferers are left in limbo with services in the social services and NHS that have no idea on how to support people with such difficulties. This is wrong. Please support this campaign, and with enough signatures for this campaign I can then take it to my local MP and ask them to get involved in trying to set up a meeting with the NHS and social services, so there can be more specialised NHS workers and social workers for this with neurological disorders, like asperger syndrome and autism without a learning disability.

please can you sign this for all autistic adults on the spectrum, please folks. All support will be very much appreciated, as many adults on the autistic spectrum - especially those that have autism without a learning disability, do not get specialised NHS or social services at the moment. Sadly, this means a lot of asperger syndrome patients or social service users do not get adequate or intensive medical or community services, and if they do, it is not good enough for someone whom suffers with a neurological-developmental disorder. This is sad, as we need to value all disabilities, and not pick and choose certain disabilities over others.
