Install Electric Vehicle chargers in Glossop and High Peak

Install publicly accessible electric vehicle charging points at key locations in High Peak - on high streets, public car parks and residential streets with on-street parking.

Why is this important?

The High Peak area is almost completely devoid of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Between Stalybridge and Sheffield there is a distance of over 30 miles without any publicly available chargers.

Given the serious traffic congestion in the area you would expect the local authority to be doing all they can to promote alternative fuel sources to mitigate air pollution, noise and climate change.

Electric vehicles will not solve congestion, but diesel and petrol engines are causing excessive and unnecessary harm as the government has recently indicated by targeting a ban on the sale of fossil fuel only cars by 2040. High Peak is currently not in a position to meet this target and risks lagging behind nearby areas.

High Peak needs to take advantage of funding sources available for the cost of electric charging and show some leadership in the field - Greater Manchester has an extensive network of free to use charging points.

How it will be delivered

The petition will be delivered electronically to Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council.

M. Lee comments on his reason for signing:

"I live in Orkney and travel 500 miles in my EV to visit my Dad in Huddersfield. We often go out for runs into the southern part of the Yorkshire dales and when driving an ICE used to do trips into the Peak district. We managed to get to Tintwistle and back home but a decent charger network would allow us to explore further south again over the snake pass or into Edale."

Thanks to everyone who has signed so far. Alongside this petition I've started to make initial enquiries to large organisations with a presence in the area that could host charging points. So far this includes: Tesco, M&S, United Utilities, High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership. I intend to contact Aldi, Lidl and Northern shortly.

If anyone owns a business and would like a charging point, please get in touch, as there are companies that can install chargers at minimal or no cost to the business.
