Highlight SWEETENERS on UK food & drinks packaging.
Change the UK Food labelling & Packaging Regulations so that any artificial sweeteners MUST be clearly labelled on the FRONT of the product. Current regulations are allowing food manufacturers to mislead consumers. Make it clear to consumers what products contain sweeteners and not allow this information to be hidden in tiny letters on the back of products.
Why is this important?
Adults and Kids are not fully informed when they reach for the product on shelves. Current labelling regulations do not require sweeteners to be highlighted on the front of packaging. Some of these sweeteners have potential allergic effects and many sweeteners have been linked to adverse health eg Acesulfame-K contains methylene chloride, a known carcinogen. We do not know enough about long term effect of new sweeteners so even "natural" substitutions like stevia should be included.
The labelling is now even more important, as with the new tax on sugary drinks more & more manufacturers are substituting sugar with sweeteners. Normal & sugar-free products sit next to each other but often BOTH contain sweeteners and that is not clear on the front of the packaging. All consumers need to be fully informed when they chose to buy a product, what does it actually contain, is it clear ?
