We all know that Brexit will not be a success unless the whole country is behind it.
Given the scope of the consultation period in the European Union Referendum Act 2015 runs until 31st December 2017, we could have a second referendum on leaving the EU before Christmas.
This would confirm that leaving the EU is still the will of enough of The People, before enacting measures that will be hard to reverse.
The result of the 2016 referendum was in favour of leaving, and most people in the UK respect that result even if they want to Remain.
Slightly more people who voted that day chose to leave. Not exactly the 67% certainty of the 1975 Ref when the UK chose to Remain in the EC, but there you go.
The Referendum Bill allocated 2 years to reflect on the benefits of EU membership before voting but for some reason David Cameron decided to rush it through in 6 months.
Although it was printed in the 2016 government information leaflet that “This is your decision; the Government will implement what you decide", it's written into the Bill that authorised the Referendum that the vote was advisory.
Given that the scope of the EU Ref consultation runs until the end of December, we should have a second referendum before Christmas just to make sure everyone is on board.
Let's use our British common sense and fair play to be absolutely sure that enough of us still actually want to leave the EU now more information is available to everyone.
"Measure twice, cut once" as the saying goes.
Brexit needs to be done on the level or it will be a disaster.
If you want the whole country backing Brexit then please demonstrate good faith in your belief that enough folk still think leaving the EU is best for us all by double-checking before the consultation period is over.
This will allow the United Kingdom to keep moving forward together in greater confidence.
The decision to Leave or Remain in the EU is not a game to be won or lost.
This is our shared future, and it needs to be shipshape and Bristol fashion or we will be scuppered.
