Safe Crossing at Hangingwater & Whiteley Wood Road

Implement road safety measures on Hangingwater Road including a footpath and crossing at the junction of Hangingwater Road and Whiteley Wood Road

Why is this important?

Please help us get over well over 5000 local people supporting this campaign as it will force Sheffield Council to properly debate this issue in the open. We have until the end of September to do just that.

Help get Sheffield City Council to finally bring in urgent traffic safety measures to protect over 100 children who regularly use this route to go to three local schools in the area. The urgency of this was brought home to us when our daughter sustained serious injuries in late 2015 from a car going less than 20 mph when she was on her way to High Storrs School. This school is the closest catchment school for Nether Green and Fulwood. However the walking route has no footpath in places and no crossing. The path opens up into a T junction (picture). The Council has admitted that the lack of footpath across this junction is dangerous and they won’t even place a School crossing warden there because of the danger.

Now the Council have said after months of talks that they will not consider installing a crossing or altering this dangerous footpath to what is the most direct route to High Storrs School, Notre Dame School and Nether Green Junior School.

It is only a matter of time before a child or another member of the community receives life changing injuries or death as a result of the council's inaction.

We intend to continue to pursue Sheffield City Council for a safe crossing at Hangingwater/Whiteley Wood Road after the presentation of over 6600 signatures to Council resulted with Councillor Mazher Iqbal (Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Transport) referring the issue back to himself (which we believe will now disappear into the long grass) and will do so until we get a satisfactory result.
On Friday the 15th of October Nic Clegg gave his full support in that matter and attended the junction to speak to concerned parents and members of the public, http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/mp-joins-parents-to-demand-crossing-on-hazardous-sheffield-road-1-8182485
We are asking if you as parents and supporters of the crossing would please email or speak to your local MP to increase the pressure on Sheffield City Council in respect of the matter, as the mornings are getting darker which is massively increasing the risk of another accident or even worse at this junction.
Thank you
Martin

Dear Supporters
We have over 6300 signatures thank you, and are now able to present the petition to a full council meeting at Sheffield Town Hall, in the afternoon of Wednesday the 5th of October 2016.
As part of the afternoon there is the ability of public to ask questions of Sheffield City Council's members in respect of the crossing, safety of children crossing there, etc. and we urge anyone with a question to come along.
WHY? It is important that you come along with your question that you may have about the Council and their decision in this matter as we only have 3 minutes to present our petition and asking questions gives the Council members more information to debate a good outcome, in our favor.
If you are able to attend you are required to report to Sheffield Town Hall (main entrance) reception between 1 and 1:30pm on the 5th of October, where your details will be taken and then you will be guided to public gallery to enable your question to be asked.
Thank You
Martin

Dear Friends,
Thank you all for your support.
We had a fantastic event this morning where parents, children and members of the community took the step of walking their children to High Storrs School. This was covered live on Radio Sheffield http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04522ny (52minutes 40seconds) and video/photographs has gone out on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/bbcsheffield/ and on Twitter https://twitter.com/BBCSheffield

Forward the links onto your friends and family asking if they will also sign the petition.
Thank you

Only 2 days to go to the Children's Safe Crossing Protest walk.
Local Councillors Cliff Woodcraft and Andrew Sangar will be walking with us on the event to raise awareness of how dangerous the foot path crossing at the junction of Hangingwater and Whiteley Wood Road is.
Radio Sheffield is attending the event to do a live interview, Radio Hallam are covering the event in their news bulletins throughout the morning and both Radio stations are publicising the problem and importance of changing this footpath/crossing on their websites.
Come walk with us and be a part of an event which has an aim to save lives by signing up at:

Please come and join us on September the 5th 2016 to walk our children to High Storrs School.

We are looking for as many parents, children, along with walkers, runners and others to walk with us to bring attention to the problem of crossing this busy junction experienced by over 100+ school children everyday along with others. The event is to raise the profile of this dangerous crossing point due to the frustration of many to Sheffield Councils unwillingness to make a safe crossing point at this junction. (The event will take around 30 - 45 minutes to complete).

We have now reached 3000 signatures on the 3 running petitions.
Nick Clegg recently quoted:
"The lack of a safe crossing point is a serious problem for the many children that have to walk from Nether Green to High Storrs School every day. It was only a matter of time before someone got seriously hurt and a wonder that it hadn't happened sooner”.
He has asked his local Councillors to help in achieving the target of 5000 signatures.
Please encourage as many people to help reach our target.
Thanks again for your help
Martin
