Vote of no confidence in the NMC

We, registered Midwives, Nurses and members of the public motion toward a vote of no confidence in the NMC as a regulatory body for Midwifery standards, both professional and educational. As such, we request a complete review and improved regulations for Midwifery.

Why is this important?

Following on from Helen Shallow’s public resignation from the NMC, subsequent interview with the Nursing Times (https://www.nursingtimes.net/news/professional-regulation/exclusive-expert-midwife-attacks-nmc-in-explosive-resignation-letter/7024875.article) and now the discussions had the parliamentary committee meeting (https://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/66054acc-5529-4b97-b091-636a2cacd518), it is evident that the NMC are not fit nor willing to provide an appropriate, fair and just provision of regulation to Midwives as autonomous professionals, that are not a ‘branch’ of nursing. Safeguarding this recognised profession and legally protected title of Midwife should be synonymous with protecting the public and at present we believe the NMC are not providing an adequate provision for this. In addition to this, we feel that Midwives are grossly under represented within the NMC and therefore our voices are not being heard and our interests are not being considered to a satisfactory standard.

How it will be delivered

This petition will be circulated until we have a fair representative number of signatures. I propose at least 10% (4,000) will be needed. I will then forward our petition to MP's, parliament, the RCM, AIMS, ARM and the NMC themselves. I will also be circulating vlogs and providing regular updates.

Dear Midwives & fellow supporters,

Thank you so much for your support in this campaign for better Midwifery regulations and a vote of 'no confidence' in the NMC. In response to your emails, tweets etc., I have amended the wording (pending approval) from "independent midwifery council' to 'improved regulations'. For example, and not by any means a preference, approaching the HCPC and moving to a midwifery committee within this. I propose that as members, we ask the RCM to circulate this to all members using their mailing lists and/or their social media presence. After all, our membership payments are what keeps the RCM running and as a union, they should act in the best interest of their members. Please copy the link to this petition and send an email to the RCM at [email protected], lets really get our message out there!!
