  • LETHAL GLYPHOSATE BACK IN CAMDEN SQUARE & WILDLIFE AGAIN AT RISK! PLS RECIRCULATE!
In April 2013 a weedkiller (this was the heavily toxic Glymark) was sprayed around the circumference of Camden Square. All visible wildlife immediately disappeared. No birds, no squirrels - absolutely nothing. For three months no birds flew through the square. Even the ravens, hardy carrion crow, were nowhere to be seen. Local councillors and environmentalists came down to the square to witness the devastation. It was agreed that no chemicals would be used on Camden Square for a period of a year and the wildlife monitored. We have actually succeeded in keeping Camden Square pesticide free for two and a half years. But the Councillors want to change that now....... On Thursday 12th November this year, at a meeting about the “improvement and maintenance” of the Square, the big guns were wheeled out with the attendance of no less than THREE Camden Councillors! The decision was reversed, without giving the community a chance to martial the numerous local opponents of the spraying of glyphosate. Councillor Phil Jones stated that there is a HUGE BUDGET to be spent on the square and yet he cannot afford the expense of a little hand weeding? He claimed that our petition had only 200 signatures to date (seriously untrue!) and that there was a lack of support for keeping the Square chemical free. Angela Mason denied even attending the meeting in April 2013 where she observed the absence of wildlife and that birds had stopped flying through the Square. Her tune has now changed. As we know, London is heavily polluted. Camden Square is a sanctuary hidden right in the heart of it all that still remains. It is a valuable and ancient lung. The attendees at this “Camden Square Community Meeting” showed no resistance to proposals to tear up all beautiful rose bushes and axe the central horse chestnut tree, as they find it “ugly”. It took a whole year for the square to be repopulated with wildlife. It is of the utmost urgency that Camden Council enforces a total ban of the use of ALL chemicals on the square. The current threat is Glymark, which contains Glyphosate. Glymark/Round Up/Glyphosate is created and distributed by corporate giant Monsanto, the inventors of the deadly weapon Agent Orange, which devastated Vietnam and its people during the Vietnam War. Monsanto sadly has huge respectability, with high-level supporters and even an American law, which states they can never be held responsible if their products are proved to be harmful to humans or animals. http://www.globalresearch.ca/monsanto-protection-act-signed-by-obama-gmo-bill-written-by-monsanto-signed-into-law/5329388 Monsanto are leaders of the GM revolution, which means that 90% of US crops are now genetically modified. According to e-newsletter “Sustainable Pulse” and many other studies, “For the past 35 years Monsanto has known of the link between glyphosate and cancer, but has systematically worked to cover it up through scientifically fraudulent methods in its safety testing research programme.….. For the first time the authors, Dr. Anthony Samsel and Dr. Stephanie Seneff, presented in tabulated form the data contained in secret Monsanto studies conducted in the period 1980 – 1990, which showed unequivocally that animals exposed to different quantities of glyphosate in their food supply developed tumorigenic growth in multiple organs.” “Monsanto Stunned – California Confirms ‘Roundup’ Will Be Labeled “Cancer Causing”. American news sources declared in September 2015: Holland is the latest European country to forbid the use of glyphosates in eg. residential areas. These chemicals are toxic, not only to the environment, but also to human beings and pets, causing permanent damage to eyesight and respiratory disorders. Toddlers and children frequent the square and will be at severe risk. Please sign with urgency to stop the destruction of Camden Square wildlife. An ultimate ban on such toxic chemicals in Camden, London and further is the ultimate goal. Here's the article from Camden New Journal in 2014: http://www.camdennewjournal.com/news/2014/may/councils-chemical-weedkiller-burned-pet-dogs-and-killed-squirrels-campaigners-claim. Digging Camden Square all up, chemicalising it, re-sculpting it just to qualify the spending of a budget, plus pandering to some deeply un-naturalistic homeowners who want to feel that they are presiding as in Hampton Court, is a crime against our ancient and beautiful Square.

  • Stop spraying Monsanto glyphosates on Bristol's streets and parks.
Bristol Council currently uses four glyphosate herbicides including Monsanto's Roundup on our streets and parks. This is despite the fact that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified glyphosate as likely to cause cancer in humans. The WHO finding sits alongside a wealth of existing evidence that raises alarming questions marks over the long term safety of exposure to glyphosate both on its own and in combination with other chemicals found in formulas such as Roundup. The use of glyphosates has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. It is not acceptable that ourselves, our children and the animals we share this city with are being routinely exposed to these chemicals whether we like it or not. If Bristol is to have any credentials as the current European Green Capital, it must exercise the precautionary principle and follow the example of cities such as Chicago, Paris and Rotterdam by banning this spraying in public places. This is a matter of great importance for those of us who care about each other's health and the health of our children, our cats, our dogs and all the flora and fauna of this city, of course including our beloved bees. For more information see this article from The Bristol Cable: https://thebristolcable.org/2015/10/bristol-monsanto-and-chemicals/ There are viable safe alternatives to glyphosates. The Netherlands have outright banned glyphosates in public spaces and are using a hot water treatment instead. A hot water and foam method is also available in the UK and Bristol Council is already aware that this can be a more effective alternative than hot water on its own. Glyphosates are the cheapest option but we must send the message loud and clear that value is not just about price and that the health and safety issues around glyphosate render its 'cheap and easy' status irrelevant. Other effective methods may cost more in cash terms but represent far better value to local residents. Using a formula such as Roundup in our public spaces is simply unacceptable no matter how cheap and quick it makes the task of urban weed management.

Many other effective alternatives exist, as PAN-UK point out, and are already in use in other European and UK cities. Indeed there are many hundreds of examples from around the world of towns and cities, both larger and smaller than Cardiff, which have effective, sustainable, economic, non-chemical weed and pest control regimes in place. • Pesticide Free Hackney
There is growing evidence chemicals (such as glyphosate ) used for pest and weed control in Hackney are damaging to human health, in particular children. Our kids need to be able to play safely in Hackney parks - face down in the ground - without fear of exposure to glyphosate and other toxic nasties. Likewise shoppers, sunbathers, exercises, dog walkers, BBQ-ers, yogis - whoever and whatever you get up to in Hackney's wonderful streets and green spaces - should be able to do so without fear of being squirted by the weed control truck. I've been sprayed by it twice as it merrily made it's way up Dalston Lane. Once while heavily pregnant. Glyphosate alone is linked to cancers, birth defects, infertility, autism and parkinson disease. The World Health Organisation has publicly stated glyphosate 'probably' causes cancer. Progressive cities such as Paris, Toronto and recently Brighton, have already voted to end the use of toxic chemicals, such as glyphosate, in all public space. If they can do it, so can Hackney! Alternative means of controlling weeds already exist. Products that are non-harmful to human health and the environment are available. Why risk the health of our children - and ourselves - when there is another way? PS: Get informed! • Ban Dangerous Pesticides in Frensham, Farnham and all surrounding villages
It seems madness to me that the council are deliberately poisoning our natural world: our life support system. Especially now, in the midst of a global environmental crisis. Waverley Borough Council need to be responding to this and acting in a responsible manner . We need nature, we are part of nature. Our well being and health is totally interdependent with the natural world. There is overwhelming evidence of the toxic legacy from glyphosate use. The case of groundsman, Dewayne Johnson v. Monsanto Bayer in the U.S.A. has been a landmark in finally acknowledging the devastating health effects of exposure to pesticide/herbicides. It is absolutely not acceptable that we are being routinely exposed to these chemicals in our public spaces - children’s play parks, sports fields, popular picnic spots, residential streets without our consent or advance notification. The bioaccumulate effect is real and devastating for wildlife- our whole ecosystem is dependent on healthy biodiversity. The sounds of our local countryside even here in leafy Surrey are changing with reduced birdsong, bees, moths and so much of our native wildlife. I’ve been alarmed at the silence from the loss of bees on Frensham Common- a place I’ve walked all my life. In past years, as the heather comes into full flower , the air is normally full of the sound of humming bees gathering stores for winter. This summer there has been an eerie silence and extraordinary stillness. I have never known such a dramatic change. This is such a serious issue. The council could choose a different approach. Please make your voice heard and tell them you want them to stop using pesticides in their green spaces grounds management. Also, we can all chose to see nature in all her wild beauty and not insist that Waverley Borough Council maintain manicured verges, parks and public spaces. Please encourage Waverley to actively encourage wildflower verges, scruffy living hedges and to set aside wildlife areas in our public parks and gardens. They are your council- tell them what sort of place you want you and your families to live in. Frensham Parish Council have now banned the use of pesticides on their land (2018) in recognition of the health concerns. It is possible to make change happen for the better! • STOP SPRAYING GLYPHOSATE CHEMICALS ON SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE STREETS AND PARKS.
South Gloucestershire Council currently uses glyphosate chemical herbicides on our streets and parks despite there being viable safe alternatives and despite the fact that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified glyphosate as likely to cause cancer in humans. The WHO finding sits alongside a wealth of existing evidence that raises alarming questions marks over the long term safety of exposure to glyphosate both on its own and in combination with other chemicals found in formulas such as Roundup. The use of glyphosates has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. It is not acceptable that our children, ourselves and the animals we share this county with are being routinely exposed to these chemicals whether we like it or not. The Council needs to exercise the precautionary principle and follow the example of cities such as Chicago, Paris and Rotterdam by banning this spraying in public places. This is a matter of great importance and urgency for those of us who care about each other's health and the health of our children, our dogs and cats and all the flora and fauna of this county, and of course including our beloved bees. There are viable safe alternatives to glyphosates. The Netherlands have outright banned glyphosates in public spaces and are using a hot water treatment instead. A hot water and foam method is also available in the UK and South Gloucestershire Council is already aware that this can be a more effective alternative than hot water on its own. Glyphosates are the cheapest option but we must send the message loud and clear that value is not just about price and that the health and safety issues around glyphosate render its 'cheap and easy' status irrelevant. Other effective methods may cost more in cash terms but represent far better value to local residents. Using a formula such as glyphosate or Roundup in our public spaces is simply unacceptable no matter how cheap and quick it makes the task of urban weed management. Other European cities have already banned them and now Glastonbury have paved the way here in the UK and have now banned glyphosates and are implementing the foam/hot water method instead. At their next meeting, Bristol City council will vote on whether to do the same following a petition that was handed in on 19th January. People-power stopped these pesticides elsewhere - can 38 Degrees members in South Glos stop them here too? If you think chemical pesticides, that have serious health concerns, no longer have a place on the streets of South Glos then please sign the petition and also email your local councillor and request that they stop spraying outside of your property and all areas! You can find your councillor details here: https://council.southglos.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx Further information can be found in the following links: The Guardian: Glyphosate is a 'probably carcinogenic' pesticide. The use of toxic glyphosate chemicals in weedkillers has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries. We are extremely concerned that our community, including young children and dogs, and our precious wildlife are being routinely exposed to glyphosate that the World Health Organisation states is 'probably carcinogenic'. You may well be aware that attitudes to wild plants have changed in recent decades and that pristine lawns without wild flowers are now outdated. These plants add colour and interest to our parks. They also serve as indicators of a healthy and safe lawn, both for us and for insect pollinators, especially bees, on whose services we depend for our food.
