Please let the People Parking Bay in Hackney remain

Please let the People Parking Bay in Hackney remain

Please allow the People Parking Bay in Hackney to remain for at least the summer in order to gauge public support for a 'parklet' programme in Hackney.

Why is this important?

We would like to see a people parking bay or parklet in every street in Hackney.

The provision of official parklets by Hackney Council in three locations in Hackney in three years is welcome and we recognise Hackney is ahead of the curve in London. However, it will take a millennium to have a significant impact on the parking environment in Hackney.

Therefore, we would like to work with the Council to develop a community and business led 'parklet' programme that will allow people and businesses to invest in the public realm. This experimental community parklet allows the gauging of public support for such an idea. Please do let the experiment run its course.

The bay is very popular with residents and passers by. The visitor book has hundreds of positive comments: https://goo.gl/photos/gUA8bbtaMamuCcUC8

Walking is the most common way for people to get around in Hackney but while car parking dominates kerbside space there is little provision for pedestrians to rest. Many people, including older and disabled people, and people with kids need regular rest stops while walking, and pavements are too narrow for walking let alone placing benches on them.

The popularity of this people parking bay is demonstrating that resting spots for pedestrians are likely to very popular.

The people parking bay was a lead article in Local Transport Today. https://www.transportxtra.com/publications/parking-review/news/53699/hackney-resident-wants-to-convert-parking-bays-into-people-places

Reasons for signing

  • Such a lovely idea - I'm not a resident of Hackney but live part time in neighbouring Haringey. My mum has limited mobility but walks as much as she can and every bench on the way is so useful. More green and community spaces, the happier and healthier our society will be.
  • PUT THE PARK ON WHEELS AND MOVE IT AT LEASE WEEKLY!!! CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE ISSUE!
  • Why shouldn't we be allowed to park things other than cars in parking spaces?

The People Parking Bay has now moved a mile down the road to Glyn Road E5, and seems to have been well received. See the photographs. https://goo.gl/photos/4eTch33Z2Y78kMuy7

If you want to see these done legally, then we need to persuade Hackney Council this is a good idea. Let's get the petition up to 1000 people

NOT GOOD NEWS. It does not look as if the Council will allow this experiment and sadly the bay will need to be moved imminently.

However, it has received good publicity and that all helps in finding out if people think it's a good idea. One day we will have parklets on every street and we've done something to make this happen.
Thanks for all your support!

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU! The immediate threat of removing the bay is over.
Thanks to you for signing the petition which has reached 640 last in only six days, we have stopped the eviction in its tracks for now at least. The Council are reviewing the situation for the moment. Thanks also to lawyers Leigh Day & Co who have been fighting this case on my behalf. Meanwhile, news spreads about the #peopleparkingbay.
