Equality for those living with dementia
I and the undersigned are asking the U.K government to review the current dementia support system and create a new system, which is fair and allows for equal support to all who are living with dementia.
Why is this important?
Equality in dementia provision/ services is unfortunately not being provided , the concept that everyone with dementia is elderly is currently at the forefront when decisions are being made , at present there is just over 42000 people all under the age of 65 living with young onset dementia in the U.K alone and these figures are set to rise , But even with these high figures in some areas the services available can be restricted to those over 65 years off age , at present depending on where you live anyone under 65 may be excluded and in many cases are not being offered the help and suport they need to live well with dementia , This is leading to depression and isolation which can then lead to further hardship for the person living with dementia and their families, friends and carer's. In general there is a lack of services and many services currently available are not age appropriate . Sadly in some instances of young onset dementia the person living with dementia might not be alive at 65yrs off age to need the services and up to the point of death will be left in a dire situation , unable to benefit and have the same quality of life as those off retirement age or of those living in a post code area that offers more support to those living with young onset dementia.younger people living with dementia should have the right to be able to access benifits and good quality age appropriate support where ever they live . In some areas there is very good support and provision for those living with young onset dementia which is not age regulated, this needs to be nation wide , Age related services / provisions and a post code lottery means many people with young onset dementia can not readily avail of dementia homes , day centres , befrienders , activities and other services , as age restrictions can range from at least 55 to 65yrs this therefore leaves me worrying for the present and future care of anyone living with dementia, i know i am not alone in believing that dementia services need to change and sadly i am not alone in this belief as stories of unequal services resonates throughout the uk and world wide, with many people living with dementia being left to deal with a terminal progressive diagnosis on their own and families being left with little or no support. This Ageism and post code lottery has left me feeling dismayed and discriminated against, therefore I and the undersigned would like the age limits around dementia services / provisions , care and treatment to be abolished and the post code lottery to end , in the hopes of ensuring a national standard along with equitable funding and access leading to equality and fairness for all living with dementia .
