Deaf Patient Support cards

Deaf Patient Support cards

To make Deaf Patient Support cards available to all NHS England patients.

Why is this important?

There is clear evidence which shows that Deaf patients are often unable to access medical services in the same way as hearing people and as a result experience poorer health outcomes. The Deaf Patient Support cards effectively and efficiently show medical staff that the patient’s first language is British Sign Language (BSL) and that an interpreter-supported health consultation or examination benefits both the Deaf patient and the hearing professional to understand each other better.

Reasons for signing

  • It was difficult communicates & I lost in the hospital. Need an Interpreter with deaf people who need getting around. Should Disabled Independence Payment but not PIP cos Personal mean own it will be lost, some hearing people don't know if disabled mean deaf or deaf blind or wheelchairs to try getting around it will be very difficult communicates, can't hear when the fire alarm, lost in the hospital.
  • I am deaf and use BSL
  • I am Chair of GDA and personally severe & profoundly deaf though accident & illness in my 40s. On behalf of all deaf people we must get NHS to understand the challenges of deafness and implement effective communications. The Deaf Communication Card is a great idea
